How To Find True Allergy Free Earrings

Many people love jewelry, but sensitive skin or allergies can prevent them from wearing some items. Fortunately, there are many kinds of hypoallergenic jewelry that can be worn to get around this problem. Allergy free earrings are just one type of jewelry made especially for people who have to be careful with what is in contact with the skin.

Many kinds of earrings are marketed as hypoallergenic, but there are differences between them that mean that any one pair may not be suitable for everyone. For pierced earrings, the most common type of hypoallergenic post is made of steel. The problem is that in many cases, the steel is of the "stainless" variety. Stainless steel can contain nickel, and nickel triggers skin allergies in many people.

The presence of nickel isn't confined to stainless steel. Most "gold" jewelry is actually made of an alloy of gold and some other metals. If nickel is one of the other metals, sensitive skin will be irritated. Other metals, especially cheap ones, can also be irritating.

The same basic problem can crop up in silver jewelry. While silver usually isn't alloyed with nickel, it can contain trace amounts of the cheaper metal. Even so, most nickel-sensitive people can still wear silver. Those with severe jewelry allergies, however, can experience problems even with trace amounts of nickel.

Surgical steel earring posts don't contain nickel. This eliminates almost all of the problems that arise from wearing the jewelry. To find these, look for earrings with packaging that specifically states that they use surgical, rather than stainless, steel.

Those who prefer to wear fine jewelry are not out of luck, but they may be out quite a bit of money. That's because the way to ensure that there is no nickel in this jewelry is to buy the finest grade. This grade is 99.9 percent pure. Sterling silver is out if you are extremely sensitive. It's only 92.5 percent pure, and the other 7.5 percent can contain nickel.

Another way to prevent problems from nickel-containing earrings is to prevent the metal from ever making contact with your skin. This is impossible with pierced earrings in their base forms, but adapters can be added that turn them into clasp-type jewelry. These adapters are made of plastic for the specific purpose of preventing allergies. By using these gadgets, you have access to all of the best pierced styles without the risk of dermatitis.

With other types of jewelry, avoiding nickel problems is easier. Simply avoid buying metal styles. Choose stone, plastic or glass for items like necklaces, bracelets and rings. Even though these nonmetal pieces won't have the flash of gold or silver, they are available in many high-fashion styles. Better still, you won't have to worry about problems resulting from skin contact.

For earrings, the best way to handle the problem is to buy those that are truly safe for your skin. Ignore labels that claim that the jewelry is hypoallergenic. Instead, look for surgical steel posts and clasps or buy pieces made of pure gold or silver. This way, you'll have earrings that stay put and that work well with your skin.
