I feel as though smoothies have got a bad rap as of late?and deservedly so, people seem to think a meal-worthy smoothie is made up of a couple frozen fruits, yogurt, water, with maybe a splash of a supp or two.? Which is great?for a bird.
I?m going to put forward the Man-Smoothie Movement.
In case obviousness eludes you, I am not a man.? I do, however, drink hearty, packed, nutrient-overloaded smoothies; or as I refer to them as: Man Smoothies.? An example of one of my favourites can be found here.
This past summer I got the chance to put on Nutrition Seminars for our Pro-Camps, and it was an eye-opener.? I had the young athletes write down what they had eaten the day prior?everything: food, drink, snack, dessert.
What I learned is that many kids and adolescents don?t overeat, instead they grossly under-eat, and then usually have a massive dinner in the evening with their family.? Unknowingly putting their bodies into starvation mode, or into a state of over-training, because their nutrition isn?t keeping up to their active lifestyles. ?These kids, that are about to enter the most competitive and demanding time in their life (unless they go on to play collegiate or professionally), are creating the worst habits for their bodies. ?These kids will soon be young-adults with absolutely no concept of the amount of nutritious food their bodies need (emphasis of course on nutritious).
It is rather daunting to find out the amount of food your body actually needs to consume in order to stay healthy and benefit from any kind of training-stress you put it through.? A great way to get through the amount of food you need to eat is to hide most of it sneakily into a smoothie.? I?m not talking about a sissy little Booster Jugo or whatever, I?m talking about a Man-Smoothie.
Here are a couple solid starting points; tweak as desired.
A couple pieces of advice before I reveal everything:
- Buy a legitimate blender. I used to cry myself to sleep knowing that I would have to wake up the next morning and solve the Matrix in order to fit everything into my not-so-Magic Bullet. ?And then I got a real blender and all my problems were solved. Including poverty and world hunger. ?You?re welcome.
- When buying a body-sized bag of Spinach from Costco ? put it in the freezer!! Don?t try to beat Mother Nature in the race of browning Spinach?you?ll lose.
