Bringing light to a new school year

A Christian Science perspective.

As America heads back to school, our education system faces many challenges. The ideal of providing a free, quality education for every child who enters the school doors ? regardless of how extreme the need (emotional, physical, academic, linguistic, etc.) ? can seem impossible to achieve. ?We take ?em all, and do the best we can,? a teacher colleague of mine used to say. But striving to reach that lofty ideal which inspires many to become public school teachers too often leads to frustration.

A recent Monitor feature highlights a dilemma every teacher faces: helping the brightest students reach their potential with ?no child [being] left behind.? New technologies promise more possibilities for individualizing instruction, but most teachers still find it daunting to tailor daily instruction to the wide-ranging needs and abilities of every student.

It?s easy to feel overwhelmed at the outset of a new school year, when each new meeting with counselors, specialists, and parents presents another set of needs to be met. So over the 20 years I?ve been teaching middle school, it?s been helpful to shift my perspective to a spiritual view that illuminates what?s really going on ? to see not a troubled child struggling with behavior or learning issues, but rather a child of a perfect, loving God, reflecting His spiritual qualities of goodness, intelligence, and harmony. As the Bible states in Genesis, ?God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him...? (1:27).

This was how Jesus saw everyone, and it formed the basis for his teaching and healing. Where the human mind tends to focus on limitation and fear, Jesus? view liberates and lifts us to recognize our spiritual nature. And he and his students proved the power of this truth over and over in their healing work, which many saw as miracles but were actually the natural results of spiritual laws governing human experience. This Bible verse is a helpful reminder: ?God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind? (II Tim. 1:7).

As children of God, all students have unlimited potential to express intelligence, despite psychological or medical theories that might predict otherwise. Children are perceptive about how they are viewed and treated, and tend to respond accordingly. Taking a spiritual view of them, I?ve seen many struggling students flourish in class. And I?ve seen negative effects when I haven?t held to that pure view. In ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? Mary Baker Eddy, who founded the Monitor, wrote: ?Let the perfect model be present in your thoughts instead of its demoralized opposite. This spiritualization of thought lets in the light, and brings the divine Mind ... into your consciousness? (p. 407).

School reform efforts have put the spotlight on teachers lately; studies show they are the single greatest factor in how much a child learns. Remembering that the Latin verb ?to educate? means ?to bring out? (not to pour in) knowledge can lessen the burden a teacher may feel. Our seeing students in their spiritual light helps children recognize and draw out their innate, God-given abilities. This perspective brings great promise for the new school year.

Bethenny Frankel?s Skinnygirl Cocktail Line Under Fire After Whole Foods Pulls It

Could it be that Bethenny Frankel’s Skinnygirl all natural cocktail line is not so natural after all? Well that is what Whole Foods is saying after the store pulled all of the products, drama drama drama! The Huffington Post is reporting that Whole Foods has discovered that some of the ingredients in Bethenny Frankel?s Skinnygirl products are not natural at all despite her claim that her line is all natural. Plain and simple it appears someone is lying here, either Frankel about her products being all natural or the store. Now here is the interesting thing, if you have ever seen a bottle of Bethenny?s alcohol then you know there are no ingredients on it, all it says is all natural. So how did Whole Foods find out what was in the cocktail line? I mean it doesn?t say and let’s be honest Frankel has never given her secret recipe or anything so it makes me think something fishy is going on here and I can?t wait to find out what it is. Personally I am so not a fan of the Bethenny Ever After star, in fact I can?t stand her so it wouldn?t surprise me at all if [...]

Rihanna Real Estate Dramz! Rihanna Filing Lawsuit Over Mansion ...

rihanna files lawsuit over mansion purchase

At least she's got that rockin' new pad now!

Rihanna is sending out an SOS to her lawyers, because she feels she got screwed with her 2009 Beverly Hills mansion purchase.

She bought the mansion back in '09 for $6.9 million, but she claims the house has all types of defects, and that "the actual value of the property at the time of purchase, taking into consideration the extensive construction defects?was millions of dollars less."

As a result, she's suing the woman who sold her the mansion for lying to her about its condition. She's ALSO suing the inspector, real estate agents who worked on the sale, and engineers who worked on the home.

We don't blame her for this AT ALL! According to legal docs, she had serious water damage in January 2010 after a "modern rainstorm" hit the mansion. Lame!

If someone pays $6.9 million for a house, they should NOT be having all these issues! Good luck, RiRi!

Tiny oxygen generators boost effectiveness of anticancer treatment

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Researchers have created and tested miniature devices that are implanted in tumors to generate oxygen, boosting the killing power of radiation and chemotherapy.

The technology is designed to treat solid tumors that are hypoxic at the center, meaning the core contains low oxygen levels.

"This is not good because radiation therapy needs oxygen to be effective," said Babak Ziaie, a Purdue University professor of electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering. "So the hypoxic areas are hard to kill. Pancreatic and cervical cancers are notoriously hypoxic. If you generate oxygen you can increase the effectiveness of radiation therapy and also chemotherapy."

The new "implantable micro oxygen generator" is an electronic device that receives ultrasound signals and uses the energy to generate a small voltage to separate oxygen and hydrogen from water ? a chemical operation called water electrolysis.

"We are putting these devices inside tumors and then exposing the tumors to ultrasound," Ziaie said. "The ultrasound energy powers the device, generating oxygen.

The devices were created at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in the university's Discovery Park. Purdue researchers are working with Song-Chu (Arthur) Ko, an assistant professor of clinical radiation oncology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Researchers have tested the devices in pancreatic tumors implanted in mice, showing they generated oxygen and shrunk tumors faster than tumors without the devices. The devices are slightly less than one centimeter long and are inserted into tumors with a hypodermic biopsy needle.

"Most of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another," Ziaie said. "My father is a cancer survivor, and he went through many rounds of very painful chemotherapy. This is a new technology that has the potential to improve the effectiveness of such therapy."

Findings are detailed in a research paper appearing online this month in Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. The paper was written by research assistant professor Teimour Maleki, doctoral students Ning Cao and Seung Hyun Song, Ko and Ziaie.

"The implantable mini oxygen generator project is one of 11 projects the Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Development at Purdue University (AMIPurdue) has sponsored," Ziaie said. "AMIPurdue has been instrumental in providing the development funding of roughly $500,000 on this project. And beyond funding, the AMIPurdue team has also helped us with market research, physician feedback, industry input, as well as intellectual property and regulatory strategy. We have been able to accomplish a great deal in a short time due to the collaborative effort with AMIPurdue."

A patent application has been filed for the design.

Future work may focus on redesigning the device to make it more practical for manufacturing and clinical trials.
