When he rang the doorbell, Zia hadn't planned to step inside. He was there to pick up his fiancee who was babysitting, but she couldn't leave (the parents were running late) so Zia agreed to hang out for a bit. His fiancee said, "Let me introduce you to the kids" ? the 2-year-old girl, the 7-year-old boy and, most important, squatting, with no shoes on, surrounded by ants on the back patio, the oldest ? the 9-year-old ? the one he would make world-famous on YouTube.

This is the boy he now calls "The Philosopher."

Nine is what fourth-graders are. You don't expect them to be wise; they're still boys. When the two started talking, there was no hint of what was about to happen, except for the slightly odd introduction. His girlfriend said he "is interested in cosmology." "Really?" Zia thought, "cosmology?" So he leaned in and asked ? just to be a badass ? "What do you think about dark matter? Any ideas?"

Wait! I Need To Film This

The boy looked up, started to answer, and almost immediately Zia thought, "Wait!" Zia Hassan is a Washington, D.C.-based musician, blogger, teacher-in-training and video cameraman and he's learned to act on instinct, and his instincts were telling him, "I need to film this." He said to the boy, "Uh, can I film this? Is that all right with you?"

The boy didn't mind. And here, a million-and-a-half views later, is what the boy told him about the universe. I don't know the right words to describe what I feel watching this. Quiet surprise? Joy? Mystery? You should just look for yourself ...

We all know smart kids, who are curious, who collect information. "I knew more things in the first 10 years of my life than I believe I have known at any time since," says the writer Bill Bryson. But what Bill knew growing up in Iowa was local: "I knew what was written on the undersides of tables and what the view was like from the tops of bookcases and wardrobes. I knew what was to be found at the back of every closet, which beds had the most dust balls beneath them." Boys gather information by climbing, crawling, inspecting, gossiping.

But this 9-year-old ? what he knows is different. It's not local; it can't be found looking under a couch. It's mind stuff, found mostly in books or college classrooms, or by letting your mind run free.

I Could Be Wrong ... I Could Be Wrong ...

Where, I wondered, did he learn about multiverses, free will, the odds of intelligent life in the universe? How does he manage to be so aware of what he doesn't know? "Of course, I could be wrong," he says over and over, offering his opinions in the most unassuming, gentle way. And his brother, talking about how baseball satisfies our need for drama ("We do not have that kind of suspense in our lives."), he's doing it too ? thinking, connecting, reflecting ? and he's 7!

What's going on in this house? Are these kids outrageously smart? Zia says they're "certainly bright," but not scarily so. Is it something the parents are doing?

"I've gotten lots of questions about how they've raised [their kids]," Zia wrote me. "I don't think they have a particular method or anything like that. They're both excellent human beings and they treat their kids as if they're intelligent young people, and not children who couldn't possibly understand how the world (or universe) works."

This, he thinks, may be the key. These kids are encouraged to think out loud, to say what they think, even if they might be wrong. Each is appreciated. The parents, he says, "are also in awe of their children." And that frees them.

"I think there are a lot of kids who think about interesting things," Zia says. "It's my guess no one really asks them about it."

Maybe that's what this family does: They turn to their kids, and they ask.

Temporary Restraining Order Against Elgin -- Pregnancy Support ...

ELGIN,?Ill., March 13, 2013?/Christian Newswire/ -- Swift protection came to TLC Pregnancy Services and the young women of Elgin in their federal case against Elgin's zoning restrictions. TLC claims the zoning laws impair young women's access to the free pregnancy services offered through the mobile ultrasound facility. Today, United States District Court Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan agreed, after hearing arguments from both sides, that TLC is likely to succeed on the merits of its case. The details of the Temporary Restraining Order state that the young women of Elgin are likely to suffer irreparable harm if Elgin's zoning restrictions are applied in a way which denies them access to the free services TLC's mobile ultrasound facility provides.

"The big question is -- why is Elgin wasting tax payer money to restrict the access of young women to free pregnancy services?" said Noel W. Sterett, an attorney with the Mauck & Baker (www.mauckbaker.com) law firm. "We hope today's ruling allows Elgin's officials to rethink their position and do what is best for TLC, Elgin, pregnant women and their unborn babies: get rid of a law which has no purpose and is unconstitutional."

"Young women have been calling and looking for the TLC mobile facility after Elgin restricted us from serving in the community." said TLC's Executive Director Vivian Maly, "At least for now, we have this good news and will be available to support these women close to home."

TLC will now bring its mobile pregnancy service back to its usual positions at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Elgin and JB's Pub & Bar for as long as the court order remains in place. Both of these locations are in close proximity to Elgin's Larkin High School.

"Women deserve access to the help they need for themselves and their unborn children without undue interference from the government," said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Casey Mattox. "The court was right to stop the city of Elgin from preventing women from obtaining free ultrasounds and health information. TLC's free services help both Elgin and its citizens, so the city's actions have been both counterproductive and unconstitutional."

Demolition begins on sinkhole house

Authorities in Florida are tearing down the home covering the huge sinkhole that swallowed a man in his bedroom, NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

Crews began demolishing a Florida home Sunday that is perched over a huge sinkhole, after deeming it too dangerous to keep searching for the man swallowed up from his bedroom.

Rescue workers on Saturday had called off their search for 36-year-old Jeffrey Bush, who?had not been heard from since the hole appeared at about 11 p.m. ET Thursday in Seffner, near Tampa.

?Unfortunately we have not been able to determine the whereabouts of Mr. Bush,? Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill said. ?With all the equipment that we brought in and specialized help, we have just not been able to locate Mr. Bush, and so for that reason the rescue effort is being discontinued.?

Authorities have said the hole, which was originally about 30 feet deep, was ?seriously unstable.? A 100-foot safety zone was set up around it Friday and homes near the hole were evacuated for fear of a sudden collapse.

The sinkhole now poses a safety risk to the residence next door, said Hillsborough County Fire Rescue public information officer Ronnie Rivera at a noon press conference on Saturday. Family members would be allowed to enter briefly along with emergency personnel to recover belongings, Rivera said.?

The demolition started at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, and wrapped up for the day at about noon. It was expected to resume again on Monday.?

Authorities were able to retrieve a few personal belongings from the destroyed house for the family, including photographs, a Bible and even the wood address marker from the front of the building.

A second family in an adjacent home began moving their possessions out on Saturday afternoon as authorities struggled to get an accurate read on just how large the sinkhole is.

Authorities brought in heavy equipment to demolish the home from outside the perimeter of the sinkhole, which Merrill said extends down as much as 50 to 60 feet.

?We?re dealing with a very unusual sinkhole,? Merrill said. ?It?s very deep, it?s very wide, it?s very unstable.?

Hillsborough County, Florida officials lay out their plan going forward at the site of a sinkhole that appeared beneath a home and is believed to have killed one of the residents.

On Friday, Jeremy Bush spoke tearfully about how he tried to save his brother.

"I couldn't get him out," he said. "All I thought I could hear was him screaming for me and hollering for me, but I couldn't do nothing."

Jeremy Bush was saved from the hole by Hillsborough County sheriff's Deputy Douglas Duvall, NBC station WFLA reported.

'Really shocking'

?Neighbors told NBC station WFLA.com of their surprise.

"It's just really shocking," said Kevin Charles, who lives two houses down from the Bush?s house. "It kind of worries me because ? it could have been any one of these houses along this side over here.?

"I think the issue now is everyone in the area is going to sit back and wonder whether should get sinkhole insurance," said neighbor Steve Hamlyn. "Because we really didn't see a need for it until now."

One man is presumed dead after being sucked into the earth as he was sleeping, and now other families in the neighborhood are on edge. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

While some in the neighborhood did not know of the risks, sinkholes are common in Florida, The Associated Press reported, and home insurers are required by law to provide coverage for the sudden disaster.

Florida?s geological makeup increases the likelihood of sinkholes, and more than 500 have been reported in Hillsborough County since 1954, the state?s environmental agency told the AP. A monster 400-foot sinkhole that sucked in a house, five sports cars, two businesses and part of a swimming pool appeared near Orlando in 1981.

"You can almost envision a piece of Swiss cheese," Taylor Yarkosky, a sinkhole expert from Brooksville, Fla, told the AP. "Any house in Florida could be in that same situation."

At a press conference at 8 a.m. ET Saturday, fire officials announced they had set up an email address, accessible at www.firefighter-relief.com, for anyone wishing to send message of condolences or donations to the family.
