Adele, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne to perform at VMAs (AP)

NEW YORK ? Chris Brown and Lil Wayne are returning to the MTV Video Music Awards stage, while Adele will make her first appearance.

The trio are the first performers announced for the Aug. 28 ceremony in Los Angeles, at the Nokia Theatre. The announcement was made Thursday.

Brown's star, once tarnished because of his attack on Rihanna, is shining bright this year, and MTV has taken note.

"He is having a moment with multiple hits this year, and he always delivers on the VMA stage," said Amy Doyle, executive vice president of music and talent at MTV, on Wednesday.

She called his 2007 performance at the VMAs one of the most memorable: "He will give an energetic, bombastic, jaw-dropping performance."

Adele, who is nominated for seven VMAs, is also scheduled to perform. Only Katy Perry has more VMA nods with nine; Adele is tied with Kanye West with her seven.

Doyle predicted Adele would "bring chills down everybody's spine, if not bring them to tears, too."

Adele has the year's best-selling album with "21," but Doyle notes that her live act hasn't been seen much: Adele was forced to reschedule some concerts earlier this year because of a throat problem.

Lil Wayne's appearance will come a day before the scheduled release of his much-anticipated new album, "Tha Carter IV." Like Brown, he has also performed before on the VMAs.

"Being a nominee and performer on the VMAs once again is an honor because everyone doesn't get that opportunity," he said in statement. "Looking forward to performing on the show, and having `Tha Carter IV' drop the same week!"

Doyle said this year's show has a dynamic set that will "allow for a lot of bells and whistles," and promises that each performance will be unique. So far, no host has been announced for the typically irreverent show.

Doyle said a tribute to Amy Winehouse, who died Saturday, is a possibility.

"We don't know yet, but certainly she is top of mind, in our thoughts and in our hearts," she said.

There is a parasite which infected about third of the population that is single-celled organism Toxoplasma gondii. Its infection appears usually with no symptoms, but the parasite can be fatal to unborn babies and damage nerve systems of people having weak immune systems.

A study is conducted that shows correlation between rates of infection by T. gondii and brain cancer incidence around the world. Researches collected global data on brain cancers in men and women and compared them with figures on T. gondii prevalence.

It has been found that cancer risk is increased after infection of that parasite. Adjusting for a range of factors that can influence brain cancer statistics, the researchers found that cancer rates went up with greater exposure to the parasite.

Across the range of infection prevalence, from 4% to 67% of the population, T. gondii was associated with a 1.8-fold increase in the risk of brain cancer. The scientists, led by Frederic Thomas, from the CNRS research institute in Montpellier, France, wrote in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters. Previous research had already linked the parasite to brain tumours in animals. There is also other evidence that T. gondii has effects on the brain leading to changes in behavior.

Infected rats are known to lose their fear of cats, making it more likely that they will be killed and eaten. This is advantageous to the parasite, since it reproduces inside the intestines of cats. The organism?s egg-like oocysts are shed in cat faeces which may then contaminate food or infect other animals. ?Some studies have suggested that T. gondii can alter the behaviour of humans too, making men more aggressive and even causing women to cheat on their husbands. Other research has pointed to a strong link between T. gondii and schizophrenia.

It's easy to make someone cry. Just show them a key two-and-a-half-minute scene from what scientists have determined is the Saddest Movie Ever Made.

According to Smithsonian.com, scientific study has determined that the most reliable tearjerker of all time is 1979's 'The Champ,' in which washed-up boxer Jon Voight returns to the ring in order to earn enough to retain custody of his son, Ricky Schroder. Particularly, the climactic scene where -- spoiler alert! -- the little boy watches his battered dad die (end spoiler). It's a moment that makes Schroder and the hardened old men in the scene all bawl their eyes out, and it's all but guaranteed to do the same to you.

Those are the findings of James Gross and Robert Levenson (you can read their study in this PDF document), who spent years looking for the optimum film clip to make people cry so that they could serve as test subjects for other social scientists' experiments on how sadness affects people's behavior. Using film to induce tears was quicker, more efficient and more ethical than, say, telling people their families had been harmed or that they were suffering from some awful disease. After all, people willingly pay good money to see movies that make them weep, and they go home without being permanently traumatized.

Turns out that watching Schroder and Voight's climactic scene was the best way to get the waterworks flowing fast, although watching Bambi lose his mother to a hunter's bullet in 'Bambi' works pretty well, too.

Gross and Levenson also found the best films to elicit other emotions as well. The quickest route to amusement, they found, was through Meg Ryan's orgasm-in-the-deli scene in 'When Harry Met Sally.' Easiest way to scare folks is via 'The Shining' or 'The Silence of the Lambs.' For obvious reasons, John Waters' 'Pink Flamingos' is the easiest way to elicit disgust, and the films that get people the most riled are the bullying drama 'My Bodyguard' and the apartheid saga 'Cry Freedom.'

'The Champ,' though, is a fascinating find, since it works just as well on men as it does on women. For all the premium our culture places on men holding back their tears, it seems there's no shame in sobbing over sports movies, particularly ones involving fathers and sons or early death. Guys, it's officially OK to cry over 'Rudy' or 'Field of Dreams.' Tears are also allowed for 'Brian's Song' and 'Bang the Drum Slowly.'

Even for women and children, there's something a little embarrassing about crying at movies; the word "tearjerker" implies that we moviegoers have to have the tears violently yanked from our resistant eyes. There seems to be something sadistic about making children sit through the mother's death in 'Bambi,' or similar animal deaths in 'Old Yeller' or 'The Lion King,' even though we all watched them as kids ourselves and didn't grow up to be sociopaths.

Critics often deride movies that make us cry as shameless and manipulative. But secretly, we like to be manipulated at the movies. We yearn for catharsis. We like horror movies to scare us, mysteries to surprise us, action movies to thrill us, and tearjerkers to make us weep. Many years ago, I interviewed Billy Crystal upon the release of his tearjerker 'Mr. Saturday Night,' and he lampooned the critics who resented how manipulative the movie was. "Damn you for making us feel something," he paraphrased.

Since that's what we actually want movies to do, feel free to cite below your favorite tearjerking movie. Maybe you cried at the end of 'Brokeback Mountain,' when a bereft Heath Ledger says, "Jack, I swear ..." to an empty shirt in a closet. Or maybe during 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,' when Sam tells Frodo he can't carry the other hobbit's terrible burden, "but I can carry you." Or maybe at the endings of 'Toy Story 3' or 'E.T.' Or maybe during 'In America,' when the 'E.T.'-inspired immigrant dad risks his last dollar at a carnival to win a stuffed toy for his daughter. (Or, if you're like me, maybe you cried at all of these.)

Hyundai Motor profit beats forecast on record vehicle (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? Hyundai Motor posted a 37 percent gain in quarterly net profit on Thursday, outstripping the consensus forecast, after it logged record global vehicle sales and gained market share from Japanese rivals reeling from the March 11 earthquake.

After posting a series of strong profits, the South Korean carmaker must manage investor expectations as Japanese rivals recover faster than expected and the won firms.

Debt problems in the United States and Europe also threaten to slow the auto market recovery in those regions, while growth in China shows signs of cooling.

Hyundai, the world's fifth-biggest carmaker along with affiliate Kia Motors, on Thursday reported a 2.3 trillion won ($2.2 billion) net profit for the April to June quarter, compared with a consensus forecast of 2.1 trillion won from Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

That was up from a 1.7 trillion won net profit a year ago and from 1.9 trillion won in the first quarter.

From this year, Hyundai has been reporting earnings on a consolidated basis to reflect the earnings of its affiliates, including financial operations, under new accounting rules.

Hyundai said its global car sales rose 13 percent to a record 1,039,088 vehicles in the second quarter from a year earlier.

Hyundai said its market share in the United States jumped to 5.5 percent in the second quarter from 4.7 percent a year earlier, driven by strong sales of its Sonata sedan and Elantra compact, while its Japanese rivals suffered from production disruptions.

On June 30, Hyundai raised its U.S. sales target by 6 percent to 624,000 vehicles for this year.

Hyundai also gained traction in its home market, helped by brisk sales of the new Grandeur large sedan.

Shares in Hyundai Motor have jumped 40 percent this year, outperforming the wider market's 6 percent gain. The stock fell 0.8 percent after the results, versus a 1 percent drop in the KOSPI. ($1 = 1050.000 Korean Won)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? When the space shuttle Atlantis came to a halt for the last time, so did the dreams of all who had fantasized of riding on a space shuttle someday.

That doesn't mean, however, that astronaut hopefuls should give up the goal of flying in space. They just have to adjust their idea of how they plan to get there.

"I think the opportunities are still there" for kids to become astronauts, STS-135 mission specialist Rex Walheim, who landed on Atlantis' last mission Thursday (July 22), said before the flight. Bright future

Though NASA has now retired its 30-year-old space shuttle fleet, the U.S. space agency is certainly not getting out of the business of human spaceflight, its officials say. The International Space Station is set to operate at least through 2020, and NASA astronauts will continue to compose a significant portion of its six-person crew.?

For the immediate future, Americans will have to hitch rides aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft, but NASA is hoping U.S. commercial spaceships will soon be able to take over the job. [7 Notable Space Shuttle Astronauts]

For its part, NASA is embarking on an ambitious program of deep space exploration. The agency is developing a heavy-lift rocket and crew capsule to take humans beyond low-Earth orbit to the moon, an asteroid and Mars.

"If kids are in school right now and want to be astronauts, there's going to be possibly even more opportunities," Walheim told SPACE.com. "With the commercialization of access to low-Earth orbit, that will give people a chance to go to the International Space Station. And then beyond low-Earth orbit exploration, NASA will be right in the front of that. The one thing I can say to the kids is: Don't take a shortsighted time frame; look at the long-term time frame, and the future of American space is pretty bright."

Study hard

A 12-year-old today might be about 20 years away from becoming an astronaut on the normal timeline, which requires advanced training in math and science.

"In 20 years, I think some amazing things are going to happen," said retired astronaut Pam Melroy, one of only two women to command the space shuttle. "Would I have loved to have flown the Apollo capsule? God, yes. How cool would that be? But I certainly don?t dwell on it, because I got the opportunity to fly on the shuttle. And they will have other vehicles that they can fly, and I will sit on the ground and be jealous of them."

It's not too early for kids who dream of becoming astronauts to start planning for the future.

"You must have a degree in engineering or science or math or an appropriate technical field," said retired astronaut Eileen Collins, the space shuttles' first woman commander. "If you want to be competitive to be selected, you must do well in school. If we're going to explore Mars or the asteroids or the moon, we're going to need geologists that also have operational skills. You can learn how to fly, how to scuba dive. And learn a language ? I think if you do, it will make you more competitive for the astronaut job."

Astronaut Cady Coleman, who recently returned from a long-duration stint on the International Space Station, said that in the absence of the shuttles, we need to make the station more visible to students.

"Schools should check in on space stations, you know, just to realize that you don't need to wait for a space shuttle to launch," Coleman said. "People live there. Every day."

Other options

And children who are inspired by space should also know that becoming an astronaut isn't the only way to get involved.

Stephanie Stilson, a 20-year NASA worker who's now serving as the flow director for shuttle retirement, recalled visiting the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center rocket garden when she was in third grade.

"I remember telling my dad, 'When I grow up I want to work for NASA. This is just great, this is so cool,'" Stilson said. "I think about it because you hear a lot of people say, especially the astronauts, that they say, 'Oh, ever since I was little, I wanted to be an astronaut.' And while I would love to be an astronaut, it was funny that I didn't say I wanted to be an astronaut; I said, 'I want to work for NASA.' Because this is what I was seeing; I wasn't just seeing the astronaut part of it, I was seeing all the rockets in the garden."

Ultimately, the end of the shuttle is not the end for American human spaceflight.

"I'm glad to share this historic moment with them," Fincke said, "and I'm also trying to get them to understand that this is the closing of one page and the opening up of a new chapter of where humans are going, and I'm looking forward to being part of that team."
