The Defender of the Faith

Mississippi Republicans have an ear for this stuff. Brandon is one of the places where it works. It?s a suburb of Jackson, a classic white-flight town with residents who don?t mind talking about why they flew. ?I moved here in 1996 from Jackson,? says Buddy Davis, a retired Army veteran who ?isn?t crazy? about his candidate choices, ?because the other race was taking over. It wasn?t safe. There was a shooting just about every day.? Mississippi is 37 percent black, and Jackson is 79 percent black; in Brandon, it?s only 17 percent. The black Republicans I meet in Brandon, like Newt supporter Keith Hall, still talk about Jackson as an example of how society stops working when the government?s swollen and people lose their values.

DuPont has joined the Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP) at Stanford University, an industry partnership that supports innovative research on sustainable energy technologies with low greenhouse gas emissions.

"We are extremely delighted to welcome DuPont as our newest corporate sponsor," said GCEP Director Sally Benson, a research professor of energy resources engineering at Stanford. "DuPont is the ideal partner a company with a robust research capability and a commitment to global sustainability. Joining GCEP is a true affirmation of the value of university-industry research partnerships."

DuPont joins founding GCEP sponsors ExxonMobil, GE, Schlumberger and Toyota. Together, the companies have invested a total of $113 million in 93 research programs since the project was launched in 2002. The project's key research areas include solar and bio-energy technologies, combustion efficiency, carbon sequestration and the electric grid.

"The work at GCEP is closely aligned with our focus at DuPont on addressing technology-based needs in fields such as solar energy, second-generation biofuels and energy storage," said Steven Freilich, director of materials science and engineering for DuPont Central Research and Development. "We feel the breadth of study and the unique caliber and collaborative nature of GCEP will further enable DuPont science to deliver sustainable solutions today and into the future."

In addition to financial support, the project's corporate sponsors provide technical expertise and real-world advice on how to accelerate the deployment and commercialization of successful inventions.

"At DuPont, we are committed to developing unique solutions to address the challenges posed by global climate change," Freilich said. "Collaboration is key to DuPont's history of innovation. We are excited about adding GCEP to the DuPont Global Collaboratory and look forward to the best scientific minds coming together in GCEP to help us solve the tough energy challenges facing our planet."

Each year, GCEP invites proposals from researchers at Stanford and other institutions to address specific energy challenges, such as new technologies to reduce costs and improve efficiencies of batteries and solar cells. Overall, about 35 percent of GCEP awards have gone to non-Stanford researchers, at 34 institutions in the United States, Australia, China, Japan and Europe.

"Among GCEP's primary goals is to keep the innovation pipeline filled with high-risk, high-impact technologies that could significantly improve energy conversion efficiency and lower cost over the next 50 years," said Schlumberger Vice President Rod Nelson, chair of the GCEP management committee. "DuPont's team of outstanding scientists and engineers will provide valuable insights on promising research opportunities that could transform the global energy system. We welcome them to the team and look forward to their contributions."

Game-changing inventions

Since 2002, GCEP researchers have filed more than 30 patent applications for potentially game-changing inventions, including a technique to wirelessly charge electric vehicles as they drive over magnetic coils embedded in the road, and a novel process for generating hydrogen from simple sugars with high productivity and conversion yields.

Under the project agreement, Stanford and collaborating institutions hold legal title to all technology, patents and information derived from GCEP-funded research. Corporate sponsors receive a royalty-free license to the patents. Participating universities and sponsors can license the technology to other entities.

The project's funding has helped jumpstart several multimillion-dollar research collaborations, including the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis and the Bay Area Photovoltaics Consortium, which are primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

GCEP researchers have published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals and given more than 600 scientific presentations. More than 500 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars around the world have received GCEP support, and many have gone on to take jobs in the energy field. At Stanford, GCEP also provides funding for workshops, an annual research symposium, a summer energy institute for graduate students and a distinguished lecture series.

"In an era of government belt-tightening, it's really encouraging to see private industry increase its support for fundamental energy research," Benson said. "GCEP sponsors have chosen to support research in a university because it brings fresh ideas, independent viewpoints and a new generation of researchers. The challenges we face will require bold new technologies. The future of the world depends on it, and these companies are helping shape the future."

Highway vote keeps Keystone fight alive in Senate

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Republicans' push for a vote on approval of the delayed $7 billion Keystone XL oil pipeline project gained momentum on Tuesday after Democrats failed to end debate on a major transportation bill.

Fifty-two senators, most of them Democrats, voted to move forward on the $160 billion highway bill without a proposed Republican amendment to authorize construction of the Canada-to-Texas pipeline, eight votes short of the 60 needed to end debate.

The defeat gave Republicans a new opening to attack President Barack Obama for rejecting TransCanada Corp's project, as soaring gasoline prices become a top issue for voters ahead of the November presidential election.

A vote on Keystone faces an uphill battle in the Senate but would likely turn the highway bill into a battle over gasoline prices and job creation.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid now must negotiate further with Republicans on a deal to hold a stand-alone vote on the controversial project and potentially dozens of other amendments ranging from clean air and water air standards to extension of green energy-related tax breaks.

"I don't know why everything we do has to be a fight. Not a disagreement, a fight," Reid said before the vote.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, speaking before the vote, argued to keep debate open and said that a deal on amendments including the Keystone project was near.

Republican senators last week used the "must-pass" legislation to try unsuccessfully to push through an amendment that would have reversed Obama's policy requiring health insurance coverage for contraceptives and other services by allowing employers to opt out for religious or moral reasons.

GAS PRICE PLATFORM

Environmental groups have fought the Keystone project, which would connect Canada's oil sands to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries, because of the pollution produced by the heavy oil sands crude.

Some Democrats support the project. But there are currently 47 Republicans in the Senate, meaning at least 13 Democrats would have to agree to move it forward.

Obama threw the project into limbo in January because he said his administration needed more time to evaluate the environmental impact of the pipeline's route through Nebraska.

In the meantime, TransCanada has said it will split the project in two and build the southern leg between the Cushing, Oklahoma storage hub and Texas refineries.

The Senate amendment - which would require Obama's signature to become law - would bypass Obama and see Congress approve the project. A study by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service said Congress has the constitutional right to legislate permits for cross-border pipelines.

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives has passed an energy bill that would see an independent energy regulator give the project a permit.

Obama has said he would veto that bill because of the Keystone measure as well as other provisions that would expand oil drilling in sensitive areas.

The $109 billion Senate transport bill would fund highway and mass-transit construction projects for two years. The current legislation expires March 31, and if no action is taken by then, road project funding and collection of federal gasoline taxes would be halted.

The House has yet to pass its version of the transport legislation, which currently is much larger, at $260 billion, and more complex.

South Korea wins rights to explore UAE oil fields

(AP) ? Two South Korean companies secured rights Monday to hunt for crude oil in three undeveloped oil fields in the United Arab Emirates, offering the energy-hungry Asian nation greater access to Mideast oil.

The Korean investment is led by the state-run Korea National Oil Corp., which will hold a 34 percent stake in the joint venture with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. It is joined by Seoul-based GS Energy, which will control 6 percent.

ADNOC, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government, will retain a majority stake in the fields.

The agreement is valid for 30 years. It covers exploration, development and oil production, according to a statement by Emirates state news agency WAM. Two of the fields are on land, and the other is off Abu Dhabi's Gulf coast.

South Korea is the world's sixth largest oil importer. The deal gives it access to reserves containing an estimated 570 million barrels of oil and is likely to require an investment of $2 billion, according to the South Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy.

The ministry expects total production to reach 43,000 barrels of crude a day. That would give the Korean stakeholders access to just over 17,000 barrels a day, based on their share of the project.

Production is expected to start as early as in 2014, the ministry said.

Samuel Ciszuk, a consultant at KBC Energy Economics, said the deal highlights the growing importance of big Asian economies such as South Korea to the oil-rich Gulf states.

"It signifies quite a deep ... strategic relationship with Abu Dhabi," he said. "They're building a relationship that Gulf states traditionally had with European countries and the U.S."

The governments of Abu Dhabi and South Korea last year signed a series of agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in the oil and gas industry. Those pacts included the broad terms of Monday's contract as well as a deal for Seoul to store six million barrels of Abu Dhabi crude oil in South Korea's strategic petroleum reserves.

In late 2009, the UAE awarded a South Korean consortium a prized $20 billion deal to build the country's first nuclear reactors.

South Korea is under pressure from longtime ally the United States to reduce its dependence on Iranian oil. It bought about 250,000 barrels per day, or 10 percent of its total oil imports, from Iran last year.

Abu Dhabi is the largest and richest of the seven United Arab Emirates. It serves as the federation's capital and controls nearly all the OPEC member's oil reserves.

Homeowners' emphasis on energy efficiency grows | Pro Hands at ...

(ARA) ? Even in a volatile economy, homeowners are making home upkeep a priority. While the number of projects annually had been on the decline in recent years, a study from BuildFax, a resource for building, remodeling and repair information, found remodeling activity was up in 2011 over 2010. Additional data shows homeowners are opting to invest in what matters most with projects that benefit their wallets, personal comfort and the environment.

Know the facts

Before buying anything, shoppers are taking time to learn more about the products they put in their homes. For one in four consumers, knowing and understanding what makes up general household products is important. As options continue to increase, this attention to research is key to finding efficient products that offer maximum value. For instance, homeowners will find that a few newer home insulation products that help provide greater energy efficiency also boast new sustainable formulations. Owens Corning EcoTouch insulation is made from 99 percent natural materials, contains a minimum of 58 percent recycled content and is verified formaldehyde free.

Energy-efficient essentials

According to the 2010 Home Improvement Research Institute Trends Program Report, reducing household energy usage and bills through energy-efficient improvements continues to be the No. 1 reason homeowners make home improvements. That same report also indicated six out of 10 consumers need help identifying what they can do to be more environmentally conscious.

?Now is the right time to make efficiency improvements around the home because homeowners will see an immediate impact on their monthly utility bills, and will reap even greater benefits in the long term,? says Frank O?Brien-Bernini, chief sustainability officer at Owens Corning. ?According to the U.S. Department of Energy, buildings use more energy in the United States than either transportation or industry, accounting for the consumption of 40 percent of our nation?s energy resources. On a more granular level, the primary use of energy in a home is for heating and cooling. In many homes, excessive energy is wasted through poorly sealed and insulated attics, walls and ductwork ? all problems that can be solved by handy do-it-yourselfers or through experienced contractors.?

The Home Improvement Research Institute reports roughly one in three homeowners plans to purchase more energy-efficient doors, windows or HVAC systems in the coming year. Sealing all openings around doors and windows can help homeowners make the most of their investment. Air ducts should also be inspected to ensure they are clean, are free of leaks and holes and direct air to the right spaces.

Recycling 101

While recycled content is commonly focused on, recyclable materials are also important. Often with home improvement projects, old materials are thrown out and replaced with the new. What many homeowners may not know is that many building materials and appliances are recyclable. Recycling is a better solution for the environment, and may be less costly than taking material to a landfill.

?There are more recyclable materials on and in a home than you might first assume. Millions of tons of shingles torn off from roofs end up in our country?s landfills each year. Fortunately, the technology now exists for all those shingles to be recycled instead,? says O?Brien-Bernini. ?In 2009, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC formed an alliance with Heritage Environmental Services to create a Shingle Recycling Program with roofing contractors to make recycling convenient, cost-competitive and differentiating and have since recycled more than 90,000 tons of asphalt shingles.?

Homeowners looking for more information about shingle recycling and other types of recycling can turn to Earth911.com, with whom Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC recently also formed an alliance. The site hosts the largest and most accurate recycling directory in North America and provides information about what materials can be recycled as well as lists of recyclers in local markets.
