All The President's Plans

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone )

NOTABLES:

OBAMA IN VEGAS: President Obama maps out his immigration plan at this afternoon in Las Vegas where, a senior administration official tells ABC's Reena Ninan, he will focus largely on what he's discussed before. The president won't put forward a bill - instead he'll support the Senate's principles outlined yesterday and explain what else needs to be done. The White House feels Las Vegas is a community symbolic of the growing Latino population in both the state and the nation and since immigration reform is a pledge the president made during the campaign, the White House says he wants to deliver.

EL DIABLO IS IN THE DETAILS: Even the senators who wrote the immigration reform proposal outlined yesterday admitted there's lots of work still ahead. One land mine: Some Republicans want to link getting green cards to whether the border is secure. Border security still a gray issue. If the Gang of Eight's efforts fall apart the president's team will step in with its own proposal, Ninan notes.

SECRET CONGRESSIONAL GROUP WORKING ON IMMIGRATION ALTERNATIVE: A separate bipartisan group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives is on the verge of finalizing its own designs for comprehensive immigration reform, ABC's John Parkinson reports. The discussions, which top aides close to the talks discussed on the condition that they not be identified, are described as "Washington's best-kept secret." Multiple sources say those involved in the talks include Democratic Reps. Xavier Becerra (California), Luis Gutierrez (Illinois), Zoe Lofgren (California), and Republican Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (Florida), Sam Johnson (Texas) and John Carter (Texas). The House's not-yet-finalized proposal is expected to address five general areas of immigration reform, according to aides close to the negotiations. Secure the border, implement a permanent E-verify system nationwide, reform the visa system, address the predicament of how to handle immigrants already in the country illegally in a "fair" and "legal manner" while determining how to handle those who have applied for legal immigration and are currently waiting in line, and reform the immigration system for future applicants. http://abcn.ws/WnjOfh

THE ROUNDTABLE:

ABC's RICK KLEIN: What could possibly go wrong? The bipartisan Senate proposal is on the table, with boldfaced names like McCain, Rubio, Graham, Schumer, Durbin, and Menendez signed on. The House isn't far behind. And the president takes up the mantle himself today, as he lobbies the public to force action at last on immigration reform ? Wait, this could get interesting, after all. The White House has had mixed results with letting Congress handle the details of much of anything. But these are the kinds of details that members of Congress from both parties have spent months if not years wrestling through; witness the twin failures of immigration reform, in 2006 and 2007, under the leadership of a different president. The real question for the White House: Will heavy involvement - and pushing in directions the Gang of Eight doesn't want to go - be more harmful for helpful?

ABC's MICHAEL FALCONE: At yesterday's bi-partisan news conference announcing the Gang of Eight's immigration reform principles, Sen. John McCain's answer about why Republicans were so eager to move on the issue was telling. "Elections, elections," the Arizona senator said. "The Republican Party is losing the support of our Hispanic citizens." He's right: Hispanic voters are becoming a larger share of the electorate and GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, won just 27 percent of the vote among the group compared to 71 percent who supported President Obama. There was also something striking about watching Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a member of the immigration reform group, launch into Spanish during the press conference. Neither Rubio's language skills nor his familiarity with the immigration issue are breaking news, but I imagine it will give other potential 2016 Republicans pause.

ABC's SHUSHANNAH WALSHE: Currently, the prevailing theory about Sarah Palin is that because she doesn't have the megaphone of Fox News anymore, the "Palin moment" is now officially over. It might be true, but there have been so many "Ends of Sarah Palin" that it's almost hard to keep track. She was over when she lost the 2008 campaign, she was over when she quit the Alaska governorship, she was over when she decided to do a reality show, she was over when she decided not to run for president. Now she's over because she severed her ties with Fox. But the reality is different. Even after she decided to resign as governor and to pass up a 2012 presidential bid, people who both love her and hate her still just couldn't get enough information about her. Palin still got an incredible amount of coverage and her voice was heard - loud and clear. It's yet another example of what she's able to pull off that others who came before or after just aren't: She's been written off since Day One, but she keeps coming back.

ABC's JASON RYAN: The FBI has released new gun background check data yesterday showing that the week after the Newtown massacre (December 14, 2012) was the busiest for gun background checks ever, followed by the week President Obama announced new gun control proposals on January 16, 2013. As ABC News has reported, gun sales have been booming since Newtown. After previously denying journalists access to gun data, National Instant Check System figures show that overall in December 2012 there were more than 2.78 million background checks carried out to purchase firearms surpassing the previous record from November 2012 when more than 2 million checks were performed. The number of total sales during the first month of the new year will be released in the first few days of February.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: MEET DEFIANT DEMOCRAT, HEIDI HEITKAMP. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., defied the odds in November when she won the closest senate race in the country, and now that she's arrived in Washington, she's defiant as ever. But now, instead of defying the pollsters, she's defying the Democratic caucus by taking divergent opinions on issues central to the President Obama's second term agenda, ranging from gun control to the environment. Heitkamp, who says growing the economy is her top priority, is concerned that the president is changing his focus to issues like climate change and gun control. "I think, you know the one thing that has gotten lost by everyone is one of the best ways that we can perform here is by getting people back to work, making sure that this economic recovery, slow as it is, gets amped up and moves forward," Heitkamp tells ABC's Jonathan Karl, host of "Politics Confidential." "It's one of the reasons why I've been such a big proponent of the Keystone Pipeline. There's a shovel ready, private sector jobs program, good paying jobs." WATCH: http://yhoo.it/TQOxTJ

BUZZ

IMMIGRATION REFORM PLAN INCLUDES A PATHWAY TO CITIZENSHIP. The Senate's plan does not grant undocumented immigrants automatic "amnesty," rather it requires them to go through an arduous process that includes undergoing a background check, paying fines, back taxes and learning English and American civics over the course of a number of years, reports ABC-Univision's Jordan Fabian. The new law would grant eligible undocumented immigrants permission to live and work in the U.S. legally, but would not confer permanent legal status, or a green card, until the border is deemed to be secure. Young people brought into the U.S. illegally as minors and some agricultural workers would face an easier path to citizenship. "We will never put these people on a path to citizenship until we have secured the border," New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said yesterday. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who helped lead the last effort on a comprehensive immigration bill in 2007 said, "We have been too content for too long to allow individuals to mow our lawns, grow our food, clean our homes, and even watch our children while not affording them any of the benefits that make our country so great." http://abcn.ws/YBGY4Q

OBAMA TALKS GUN VIOLENCE WITH POLICE CHIEFS. President Obama is enlisting the help of police chiefs from communities devastated by mass shootings as he continues a public push for Congress to act on his proposals to curb gun violence, ABC's Mary Bruce notes. "No group is more important for us to listen to than our law enforcement officials," the president told reporters before a White House meeting yesterday with sheriffs and police chiefs from across the country. "They are where the rubber hits the road." The president and members of his cabinet met with the police chiefs who responded to the deadly shootings in Aurora, Colo., Oak Creek, Wis., and Newtown, Conn, along with representatives from the Major Cities Chiefs Police Association and the Major County Sheriffs' Association. "I welcome this opportunity to work with them; to hear their views in terms of what will make the biggest difference to prevent something like Newtown or Oak Creek from happening again," Obama said.

CHICK-FIL-A CEO AND GAY ACTIVIST FIND COMMON GROUND. The leader of a national gay-rights group says he's coming out-as a friend of Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy, ABC's Chris Good reports. "I've gotten to know Dan, he's gotten to know me. He's shared concerns about young people, about Chick-fil-A being used for certain purposes," Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride, told ABC News. Last year, Cathy sparked a national controversy by telling a radio host that "we're inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage. And I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude that thinks we have the audacity to redefine what marriage is all about." Windmeyer said that Cathy called him last year, during the heat of the controversy that led national gay-rights groups to protest Chick-fil-A. Cathy reached out seeking advice and understanding, Windmeyer said. Windmeyer was a guest of Cathy's at this year's Chick-fil-A Bowl between LSU and Clemson at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The activist also says Chick-fil-A has stopped donating to anti-gay groups, according to his review of the company's 990 tax forms. http://abcn.ws/WxuchC

GOVERNMENT WASTE IN THE SPOTLIGHT. The Government Accountability Office is due to produce its biannual report on the areas of the government that present the highest risk for squandering tax payer dollars in the next couple weeks. Though the GAO does not preview this list ahead of time, ABC's Sarah Parnass takes a look at what might be targeted: http://abcn.ws/113uncb

Ireland says horse DNA in its burgers came from Poland

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Beef containing horse DNA that was supplied by an Irish company to major food companies like Tesco originated in Poland, Ireland's agriculture department said on Saturday.

The British food industry has been rocked by the revelation retailers sold beef products that contained horse DNA, a scandal that has also left Ireland's 2 billion euros (1.6 billion pounds) beef industry reeling from the knock-on effects.

Results of tests showed that Polish ingredients used by Irish burger manufacturer Silvercrest contained 4.1 percent horse DNA, the agriculture department in a statement.

It said further tests of the Polish ingredient concerned showed up to 20 percent horse DNA content relative to beef, confirming the raw material from Poland to be the source of equine DNA content in certain burgers.

Tests on samples taken from Irish food ingredients were negative for equine DNA and agriculture minister Simon Coveney said the results maintained the integrity of Irish food production.

Burger King, one of the most popular fast-food chains in Britain and Ireland, said on Thursday it had stopped using Silvercrest's products. There was no horse DNA found in products sold by Burger King.

Smaller retail chains Aldi, Lidl and Iceland have also sold beef products found to contain horse DNA.

Silvercrest's parent company ABP Foods reiterated the plant had never knowingly sold equine products and that it would appoint a new management team, independently audit third party suppliers and source all future raw material from Britain and Ireland.

Tesco, which withdrew from sale all products supplied by Silvercrest, said in a statement that the source of horse DNA identified by the department correlated with the results of its own investigations at the plant.

Food safety experts say horse DNA poses no added health risks to consumers, but the discovery has raised concerns about the food supply chain and the ability to trace meat ingredients.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Six Filipinos were among the hostages killed by militants who laid siege to an Algerian gas field for four days, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday.

Sixteen Filipinos have been accounted for and four others are still missing since Algerian special forces stormed the plant on Saturday to end the siege, Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez told reporters.

He said the information came from Algerian authorities, which expressed their condolences to the Philippine government and the victims' families.

"The deaths of the six Filipinos were a direct result of the hostage-taking incident in the area and mostly by gunshot wounds and the effects of the explosions," Hernandez said.

He said his office was notifying the families and arranging for the repatriation of the victims' remains, while the government was focused on finding the missing four Filipinos. A team from the Philippine Embassy in neighboring Libya, which covers Algeria, was on the ground in that country.

Four Filipino survivors were treated in a hospital in Algiers, Hernandez said.

Most of the workers were employed by Japanese companies, he said.

A total of 1,780 Filipinos work in Algeria. They are part of 10 million overseas workers, or 10 percent of the population employed abroad.

5 Tips On How To Be An Authority Blogger - Article Submitter

When it gets down to it, a blog is really a more personalized source of information. Bloggers are as real as they can get - writing articles infused with their own opinions based on personal experience or taste. If Peter Jennings had a blog, it probably wouldn't sound like his newscast.

Blogs are not made to be at par with Wikipedia, but there are some blogs out there that seem to have grasped the attention of readers so much that they're recognized as the subject authority. Such are known as 'Authority Blogs'. These blogs have become the go-to place for readers looking for unbiased, unsolicited information. Expert bloggers will tell you to be like them. But to do that, you must know what makes authority blogs tick. Here are 5 essential tips on how to be an authority blogger.

1. Talk the talk - Remember the intellectual impact your college professor created the first time you sat on his class? If you want to be recognized as a niche expert, you have to talk like one . That's the kind of impression you'd want to create to be perceived as a subject know-it-all. Granted, your last name is not "-Pedia" (Wiki Pedia, get it?), you are allowed to learn new things as you blog. If readers throw you a difficult question, simply do your own research or straight out tell the reader that it's an area you are still exploring.

2. Peer up - Birds of the same feather.... you know how the saying goes! Bloggers are known to band together in online communities. Usually, the ones who write about the same topics belong to a single group. It's important to get to know other bloggers, authority ones or not, because these people help each other out. You can mention each other in blog entries, exchange links and do guest posts to create a more visible authority.

3. Be an innovator - Blog seniority is measured not just by blog age alone. Being a pioneer can also get your blog up on the pedestal. Mt. Everest has been summited numerous times but it doesn't stop the many other people who climb it year after year. So what if the first summit record is taken? These climbers go after the other world records the mountain still offer, such as being the first to climb it using a pogo stick - without supplemental oxygen - things like that! For your blog, develop an idea that would put you on the map, so to speak. Do something that's never, or maybe only a handful of people have, done before.

4. Talk about the mundane - It might sound silly that run-of-the-mill bloggers talk about the mundane, so why should you? Just because you're an authority blogger doesn't mean you should only be writing about extraordinary stuff. Some people like to be reminded of the everyday. And if this everyday topic can be discussed in an expert voice, it just sounds way more interesting. Who knows, a closer look at laundry sorting can be a hit article for stay at home moms!

5. Bring it - Mediocrity has no place in authority blogs. What can you bring on the table? Bring it! Authority blogs carry a reputation that can easily be toppled by another newcomer. So, challenge yourself to outdo your last entry each time you update your blog. Set a goal to make each article a hall-of-famer in its own right.

Being an authority blogger is not about being pretentious. It's about putting your best foot forward to become recognized by readers as a credible, if not the prioritized voice in the blog world.

Weekly Ketchup: Jurassic Park Set to Reopen in Summer of 2014

This week's Ketchup covered a seven day period in which Hollywood recovered from weeks of almost zero activity with enough newsworthy movie development announcements for two of these columns. Indeed, this writer expects some omissions to be pointed out by commenters, but hey, there's only ten slots available each week. The stories that did make the cut include high profile sequels (Jurassic Park IV, Pirates of the Caribbean 5), a much lower profile sequel (Hot Tub Time Machine 2), remakes (Ben-Hur and possibly Gremlins), and the inevitable Lance Armstrong biopic.

This Week's Top Story

JURASSIC PARK IV FINALLY GETS A RELEASE DATE

There were arguably a handful of movies this week that could have received the distinction as the week's "top story." The idea of a fourth Jurassic Park however has been lingering around for so long (Jurassic Park III came out in 2001), that it won out, even though this is the third time in two years that Jurassic Park IV got the headline (previously, here and here). And now, to the actual news, which is admittedly pretty skimpy on details: Universal Pictures has scheduled Jurassic Park IV for June 13, 2014, and it will be released in 3D (like the original movie will be for its rerelease in April). Whether or not the title will use Roman numerals appears up for debate. This news comes not long after Steven Spielberg delayed filming of Robopocalypse, which begs the question of whether he will, in fact, be directing Jurassic Park IV, or merely producing it (as it currently, officially stands). This caps a week full of release dates (mostly because studios announce their yearly plans at the beginning of the year; see how that works?): The newly revived Picturehouse will release the drama/concert movie mashup Metallica Through the Never, starring Dane DeHaan, on August 9, 2013; Machete Kills, at one time thought to be going direct to video, will "hit" theaters on September 13, 2013; Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity comes out October 4, 2013; and MGM and Paramount will release Brett Ratner's Hercules comic book adaptation, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, on August 8, 2014. See the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 news down below for more release dates (from Disney).

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 MUST BE SOME KIND OF HOT TUB TIME MACHINE... SEQUEL

High concept comedies sometimes succeed by a different barometer than most other genres. Movies like Zoolander and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery can open to "okay" box office domestically, but then do much, much better after their theatrical release. So much so that they eventually get sequels (it may not have happened yet, but Zoolander 2 is still in development). And that brings us to Hot Tub Time Machine, which only made $50 million domestically in 2010 on a production budget of $36 million. Thanks, however, to such vehicles as Comedy Central, Hot Tub Time Machine now has a growing audience that belies the realities of that original theatrical release. And so, MGM, that studio so known today for remaking its old hits, is in early negotiations to instead make a sequel to Hot Tub Time Machine. These preliminary discussions include director Steve Pink, and stars Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, and Craig Robinson. John Cusack is notably not in discussion for the sequel, and now, here's some speculation as to why (besides possibly more obvious reasons, like he doesn't want to do it). Just as Hot Tub Time Machine took the characters back to the 1980s, one would have to speculate that the logical target for the sequel would be the 1990s. If the sequel does target a different decade, it might make more sense for the "John Cusack slot" (whose casting was an homage to his 1980s movies) might go to an actor who is more associated with 1990s movies. Teen comedies sort of went out of vogue for most of the 1990s, but one film that did quite well was Clueless, and Paul Rudd seems like someone who might be sort of perfect... if this is the approach that Steve Pink and MGM plan on taking. Admittedly, there's more than one "if" within all of that. Rob Corddry may team up with Steve Pink to work on the screenplay.

#2 WITH THAT NAME, IT WAS INEVITABLE: ANNE HATHAWAY TO DO SHAKESPEARE WITH THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

First off, for those wondering what that title implies, here's a theatrical history lesson (weird, huh?). And now, the actual story, which is that Anne Hathaway is reportedly attached to star in a new adaptation of William Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew, about a woman with a fiery personality named Katherina who is courted contentiously by a rapscallion named Petruchio. The Taming of the Shrew has been adapted many times, including a 1967 dramatic version starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Cole Porter's Broadway musical Kiss Me Kate, and even an episode of Moonlighting. This latest version will be set in Italy (the play was set in Padua) in the mid 20th Century. It's not yet known if Hathaway will be playing an Italian herself. Screenwriter Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) will adapt the screenplay for a new British production company with a first look deal with Working Title Films, which likewise has a first look deal with Universal Pictures.

#3 THE LANCE ARMSTRONG BIOPIC IS CALLED CYCLE OF LIES... SEE WHAT THEY DID THERE?

This story, one has to imagine, probably got started quite a while ago, but was kept hush-hush until after a certain TV interview last night. J.J. Abrams, Bad Robot, Paramount Pictures, and producer Bryan Burk have started development on a Lance Armstrong biopic based upon the upcoming book by Juliet Macur called Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong. As the title pretty clearly intimates, the tone here will be negative/damning. Cycle of Lies is announced in pretty stark contrast to the Lance Armstrong movie that Jake Gyllenhaal was attached to star in years ago, which would have been more of a glowing ode to athletic accomplishment, probably even with a certain "USA! USA! USA!" vibe (or maybe even this more NSFW vibe). There's no word yet about whether Sheryl Crow might contribute to the soundtrack. Lance Armstrong sort of overshadowed what should have been the big news for Bad Robot this week, which is that Ron Howard is now attached to direct a movie for Bad Robot called All I've Got. Based on a 2003 Israeli TV movie, All I've Got tells the story of a woman in the afterlife who is given the chance to go back and relive what her life would have been if her original lover hadn't died in a horrific car accident.

#4 EMMA STONE TO ENTER THE HAUNTED HOUSE OF GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S CRIMSON PEAK

Although much of the press about this week's new horror release Mama would have you think it's the new movie from director Guillermo del Toro, as any fan of giant robots knows by now, that distinction actually belongs to Pacific Rim. Though Pacific Rim is still a few months away, GDT is already casting up his next film as director, which will be called Crimson Peak. Specific details are being kept hush hush at the moment, but it's variably described as being either a ghost story, or more precisely, a haunted house movie (which usually also includes ghosts). The first name to be mentioned this week was Emma Stone, followed by Charlie Hunnam, who is also costarring in Pacific Rim. Although this casting is being done now, filming isn't expected to actually start until February, 2014, after Guillermo del Toro wraps filming of the pilot episode for the FX series The Strain, based upon a novel that GDT cowrote.

#5 BRADLEY COOPER TO STAR IN THE SPY MOVIE TO (PROBABLY NOT) END ALL SPY MOVIES: DARK INVASION

It's been written about a lot over the years, but the fact still remains: World War II receives a lot more coverage from modern movies than World War I does. The reason for this is probably because WWII just has better villains. Hopefully, that's not too blunt of a way of putting it, but Nazis are pretty evil as far as villains go; anyway, this story isn't about Nazis. Warner Bros has acquired the film rights to an upcoming (September 11, 2013) non-fiction book by Harold Blum called Dark Invasion, with an eye towards it being a star vehicle for Bradley Cooper. Presuming the movie actually gets made someday, Cooper will be playing NYPD Captain Tom Tunney, who is tasked in 1915 with bringing down a ring of German spies intent on preventing the USA from entering the war against Germany. Harold Blum says in the book that the CIA considers Tunney to be the first head of homeland security, and though there's nothing like that online anywhere that I could find, maybe that's just the CIA doing their job.

#6 THE WEEK IN NON-STORIES THAT FEEL LIKE REALLY BIG STORIES: ZACK SNYDER'S STAR WARS SPINOFF, AND THE GREMLINS REBOOT

This first story received a lot of online attention this week for obvious reasons, but what wasn't as well covered was the fact that it was quickly denied (not that such denunciations are always 100% truthful). Anyway, the story was that Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, and the upcoming Superman movie Man of Steel) would be developing a Star Wars spinoff movie that would exist outside the new trilogy, with a story that is like Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, except with Jedi Knights. The idea that there could be Star Wars spinoff movies mostly comes from the idea that Walt Disney Pictures might want to be able to put out more Star Wars movies than just those within the strict limitations of a trilogy (something hinted at by various statements in recent months). That story came from Vulture, as did this one, which involves another cherished 1980s franchise: Warner Bros is reportedly very interested in rebooting Gremlins. However, there is almost no "there" there, as any potential movie would require a deal with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, and for various reasons (namely cost and Spielberg's demand that he be involved), that deal is unlikely to happen. Both Star Wars and Gremlins get news stories lots of page hits though.

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#3 THE FIFTH PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN GETS A 2015 RELEASE DATE

Besides Jurassic Park IV (and for some people, possibly more so), the announcement this week of a July 10, 2015 release date for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean was probably the biggest news. Walt Disney Pictures also announced the signing of screenwriter Jeff Nathanson to work on Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Nathanson is usually credited as being the screenwriter of Catch Me If You Can, but his other credits also include story work on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and sole screenwriting credits on the sequels Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3. Along with the release date came reports that Johnny Depp is signed to once again play Captain Jack Sparrow, but the curious thing there is that one would think that would have been the lead story, as opposed to the release date or the screenwriter. There was news back in 2011 that Depp was in negotiations, so maybe those talks went so well that Disney never thought it necessary to re-publicize his involvement. That would make sense, of course, except for the fact that a studio keeping quiet about Johnny Depp starring in their hugely expensive tentpole release seems... sort of weird. Anyway, other Disney release dates announced this week included The Muppets 2 (3/21/14), Maleficent (7/2/14), and Brad Bird's science fiction drama 1952 (12/19/14), starring George Clooney.

#2 NOW THAT SCHWARZENEGGER IS BACK, SO IS TERMINATOR 5, WITH NEW SCREENWRITERS

A little over a year ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger's career as a movie star was very much in question. The question was whether people would spark again to the former Governor of California, or if they would find his custodial transgressions too unlikable. Well, The Expendables 2 came out, and the movie did well, without much of a peep or complaint about the fact that Schwarzenegger was in it. Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger kept up with a fairly steady work load, including this week's The Last Stand, The Tomb with Sylvester Stallone, and a commitment to reprise his Cimmerian role in The Legend of Conan. Of course, all of that being written, it's worth noting that we don't actually know to what extent Arnold Schwarzenegger might ever appear in another Terminator movie again. Regardless, it would also be sort of silly to pretend that the actor and the franchise aren't pretty well linked. The slowing down in development of the fifth Terminator did, after all, seem to happen in roughly the same period as the temporary cooling off by Hollywood towards Arnold Schwarzenegger. Anyway, development is back on for the fifth movie, with screenwriters Laeta Kalogridis (Pathfinder, Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (cowriter of Drive Angry, Dracula III: Legacy) now hired to start work. This is one of the week's Rotten Ideas based mostly on the declining RT scores for the Terminator franchise itself, but also a little bit because of (some of) the RT scores for the screenwriters.

#1 HOW DO YOU FIGHT THE IDEA OF REMAKING BEN-HUR?

Obviously, there are some movies that get remade or revisited fairly frequently (Dracula, A Star is Born, and Les Miserables come to mind). And adaptations of the 1880 Lew Wallace novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ were happening way before that really famous one in 1959 starring Charlton Heston. Having said that, some movies become so successful or cemented within the popular consciousness, that once they happen, they pretty much kill the concept going forward. Titanic is arguably one such movie. Regardless, MGM, that studio so inseparably in love with remakes, made a lot of money in 2012 (thanks, Skyfall and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey!), and so they're only more invested in remakes than ever. Which brings us to Ben-Hur, which they're planning on remaking again, except this time, they want to spend more screen time on the Jesus Christ part of "A Tale of the Christ." They probably won't be calling Mel Gibson.

Utah State basketball: New Mexico State snaps USU?s win streak

College basketball ? New Mexico State runs over sluggish USU.

Las Cruces, N.M. ? So much for records. On Thursday night, they didn?t matter.

The Utah State basketball team got schooled. And all the momentum churning along from a 13-win streak lurched to a halt.

?

Storylines N. Mexico St. 64, Utah St. 51

New Mexico State shoots nearly 70 percent from the floor in the second half to cruise to the win.

? Utah State loses its first game since November.

"Sometimes you get your butt whipped," coach Stew Morrill said. "That?s what happened tonight."

New Mexico State (11-8, 5-2) played a brilliant second half, and Utah State (14-2, 5-1) played something less than that in a 64-51 loss at the Pan-American Center, the team?s first defeat since November. The Aggies ? that is, the ones wearing crimson ? had an exhibition of dunks, putbacks and blocks in a highlight-reel win that coach Marvin Menzies later called their best game of the year.

For the visitors, they can?t shake the memory free quickly enough. Utah State managed to close a 21-point lead to the teens by the end, but the game easily qualified as its worst.

It began as a cold shooting night. Utah State struggled to run its offense against 7-foot-5 Sim Bhullar, who ended up with five blocks. The roadblock in the middle exacerbated some shaky shooting touch, and USU shot only 8 for 31 from the field for a season-low 18 points at half.

That by itself would?ve been overcomeable, as NMSU led by only five at halftime. But then Utah State?s defense caved with stellar midrange shooting from the home team, followed by dunks and layups galore. Bandja Sy was the main culprit, finishing with a team-high 16 points.

A 15-4 run in the second half spanning six minutes sealed it up for New Mexico State. And USU, which entered the game undefeated in the Western Athletic Conference, looked absolutely flummoxed.

"They just out-physicaled us," said Jarred Shaw, who had 11 points and was tasked with going against the bulky Bhullar. "They got the momentum going. They put us back in the place we need to be in: not too big-headed because we were 14-1."

Utah State looked like anything but a 14-1 team for most of the game. The team turned the ball over 14 times, got outrebounded 33-26 and allowed NMSU to shoot 57.8 percent from the floor. Only a spate of late 3-pointers made its own shooting statistics appear passable. And Utah State made only four appearances at the free-throw line, making one.

story continues below

Preston Medlin led the team with 14 points, and was one of the few standard-bearers on offense. Many others dribbled out: Utah State missed 10 layups or shots around the basket.

It was the ultimate measurement of a team that Morrill had said coming into the game had a "deceiving" record.

"They were much more physical than us, and they let us know it," Morrill said. "On offense, we executed a little bit at the end of the game. We just took some bad shots, got frustrated, tried to make plays when they weren?t there."

The loss comes at an inopportune time. Utah State must turn around to play Denver on Saturday, and the Pioneers are coming off a 73-37 drubbing of San Jose State.

After Thursday night, there?s a beating urgency for the Aggies to get back to winning. And a few things need to change quickly.

"If we don?t lock in against Denver, we?ll get embarassed," Shaw said. "I hate to say it ? it?s just the facts."

Subscribe to Blog via Email - ? The Homes & Land of Whidbey Island

Many home owners, buyers, and sellers have been carefully watching the new federal finance package passed on January 1, 2013 by both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. This is because it included automatic tax increases as well as federal spending cuts that involve real estate programs.

Many important real estate programs were extended, albeit for a limited time. Therefore homeowners, buyers and sellers should pay attention to these new time periods when planning financially.

Components of the legislation most likely to impact real estate decisions:

?Capital gains tax exclusions for sale of a principal residence remain in place. This benefit protects up to $500,000 of capital gain ($250,000 for individual filers). However, home sellers with incomes of $450,000 ($400,00 for individual filers) or above and where the gain on the sale of their home is above $500,000 will now pay taxes on the excess capital gains at a higher tax higher rate.
?Key provisions of the Mortgage Debt Relief Act are extended through January 1, 2014. This provides financial relief in the form of lower taxes for home owners or sellers who have a portion of their mortgage debt forgiven by their lender. For sellers, this forgiveness occurs through a form of a short sale or foreclosure. For home owners, this relief comes in the form of a loan modification. Without this extension, any debt forgiven would become taxable. Home buyers will benefit from this extension since it will likely result in a greater number of short sales and foreclosures being available for sale, as underwater sellers are more incentivized.
?Deductions for mortgage insurance for filers earning below $110,000 are extended to through 2013. Mortgage insurance?usually paid for by home buyers?allows home buyers who have less money to put down to qualify for better loans. Home buyers with qualified residences will be able to continue to deduct the cost of this mortgage insurance. This benefit is also retroactive through 2012.
?The 10 percent tax credit for energy improvements to existing homes is extended through 2013. This credit, which is limited to $500, applies to existing homes and is also retroactive through 2012.
?Capital gains on real estate contributed by home owners for conservation are extended through 2014. Increased contribution limits and carry-forward periods for contributions of appreciated real property will be maintained.
?The first $5M in individual estates and $10M for family estates are now exempt from estate tax. Tax rates in excess of these figures have increased. This will benefit the heirs.

Other changes?such as new estate tax exemptions and an increased capital gain tax rate for those earning more than $450,000 ($400,000 for individuals)?may also impact real estate decision-making. As always, home owners, buyers, and sellers are advised to seek the advice of a qualified tax advisor before making major financial decisions, including the decision to buy or sell real estate.

Break Down Your Bad Habits Into Their Essential Parts to Form Better, New OnesBreak Down Your Bad Habits Into Their Essential Parts to Form Better, New Ones We all have one or two habits that we'd like to break?or habits we'd like to start?but can't quite motivate ourselves. The folks at Epipheo.TV show us, in simple video form, what it takes to really change that habit.

The video is first in Epipheo's month-long series on life hacks, and it makes it really easy to understand the nature of habits. Instead of trying to change the behavior directly, try to change the cues and rewards that enforce that behavior. By identifying the cue and inserting a new reward, you should be able to change the behavior without pulling your hair out.

This is something we've talked about a few times before, but the video puts it into really simple terms if it all feels a little too clinic-y for you. Of course, if you're more of a flowchart person, we've got something for you too. Check out the video above to see more.
