Consumer spending, income stall; Sandy a factor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer spending fell in October for the first time in five months and income growth stalled, leading some economists to cut already weak estimates of fourth-quarter economic growth.

Superstorm Sandy was partly to blame for the pullback in spending as the quarter started, but economists said the data on Friday also underscored the economy's fundamental weakness, stemming from the uncertainty over the course of fiscal policy.

The Commerce Department said consumer spending fell 0.2 percent after a 0.8 percent increase in September. Income growth was flat as wages and salaries dropped 0.2 percent, in part because of work disruptions caused by the storm, which lashed the East Coast in late October.

But even stripping out the $18.2 billion annual rate hit to wages and salaries from the storm, they would have been flat.

"What this is showing is the economy, broadly, is slowing in the fourth quarter and it is concern on the part of businesses and consumers with respect to the fiscal cliff," said David Berson, chief economist at Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio.

The cliff refers to automatic government spending cuts and tax hikes early next year that could drain about $600 billion from the economy unless lawmakers and the Obama administration agree on a less painful plan to reduce budget deficits.

Fears an impasse could send the economy into a swoon undercut business spending in the third quarter. So far there is little sign of progress in Washington budget talks, which the top Republican in Congress on Friday said were at a "stalemate."

Inflation-adjusted consumer spending fell 0.3 percent in October, the first decline since June, after rising 0.4 percent the prior month.

It was the largest drop in real spending since September 2009 and implied growth in consumer spending this quarter would struggle to exceed the third-quarter's 1.4 percent annual pace, which was the slowest in more than a year.

The data prompted economists to cut fourth-quarter GDP growth estimates, some quite sharply. Estimates now center between a 0.8 percent and 1.8 percent annual pace. The economy expanded at a 2.7 percent rate in the third quarter.

"It's going to be challenging for real spending to grow above the third-quarter's pace. The fundamental drivers of spending are still sluggish," said Sam Bullard, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina.

BUDGET TALKS KEY

And the risks to growth are rising. A second report showed that while factory activity in the Midwest rose in November for the first time in three months, new orders tumbled to their lowest level since June 2009, when the recession ended.

U.S. financial markets shrugged off the data as traders kept a wary eye on the budget talks in Washington.

Stocks on Wall Street ended flat, while prices for longer-dated U.S. government debt fell modestly. The dollar was barely changed against a basket of currencies.

Major retailers on Thursday reported unexpectedly weak sales in November, which many pinned on Sandy.

Consumer spending is expected to bounce back by December as households replace goods damaged by the storm and income picks up as workers return to work. However, the magnitude could hinge on the outcome of the budget talks.

"If the discussions in Washington linger as they appear they are, then the pick-up in December would be less than it otherwise would be because you still have this level of uncertainty weighing on consumers," said Berson.

The income at the disposal of households after inflation and taxes dipped 0.1 percent last month after being flat in September. Despite weak income growth, the saving rate - the percentage of disposable income households are socking away - rose to 3.4 percent from 3.3 percent the prior month.

Inflation was largely contained, helped by a 29 cent drop in gasoline prices. A price index for consumer spending nudged up 0.1 percent, taking its increase over the past 12 months up to 1.7 percent from 1.6 percent in September.

So-called core prices, which strip out food and energy costs, also edged up 0.1 percent, with the year-on-year gain holding steady at 1.6 percent.

Economists said weak growth and benign inflation could compel the Federal Reserve to keep on an ultra easy monetary policy path.

"We believe the weak tracking of fourth-quarter GDP will reinforce the Fed's case for taking out insurance against downside risks," said Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

Mix masters: Scientists image the molecular structure of polymer blends

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Using an enhanced form of "chemical microscopy" developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), researchers there have shown that they can peer into the structure of blended polymers, resolving details of the molecular arrangement at sub-micrometer levels. The capability has important implications for the design of industrially important polymers like the polyethylene blends used to repair aging waterlines.

Polyethylene is one of the most widely produced and used polymers in the world. It's used in many familiar applications -- milk bottles, for instance -- but the NIST research is motivated by a more critical application: water pipes. Aging water infrastructure is a significant national issue. The Environmental Protection Agency has reported that in the United States there are over 240,000 water main breaks per year, leaks wasting 1.7 trillion gallons of water per year, and costs to taxpayers of $2.6 billion per year.

Polyethylene pipes are one potential solution. They're relatively inexpensive to make and install, and they have negligible corrosion issues and a predicted service life of up to a century under ideal conditions. Unfortunately, current test standards do not address service life under field conditions, especially for fusion joints in the pipes. This uncertainty has slowed the use of large diameter polyethylene pipe.

The industry standard for polyethylene pipes is a blend of two different forms of the polymer, a medium-weight, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and a high molecular weight "linear low-density polyethylene" (LLDPE). Combining the two, says NIST materials scientist Young Jong Lee, dramatically improves the toughness, strength and resistance to fracture of the polymer.

The problem for quantitative service-life prediction is understanding exactly why that is. Developing the necessary predictive models has been hindered by knowing just how the HDPE and LLDPE molecules blend together. They are so close chemically that X-ray or electron imaging -- the usual go-to techniques for molecular structure -- can't readily distinguish them.

The NIST team is using a variation of Raman spectroscopy, which can distinguish different chemical species -- and measure how much of each -- by analyzing the frequencies associated with the different vibrational modes of each molecule. The exact mix of these frequencies is an extremely discriminating "fingerprint" for any particular molecule without help of fluorescence labeling. Raman spectroscopy using focused laser beams has been used as a chemical microscope, able to detail the structure of complex objects by mapping the chemical composition at each point in a three-dimensional space.

The NIST instrument, called "BCARS" (broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering) microscopy, uses a pair of lasers to gather Raman data at least 10 times faster than other Raman imaging methods, a critical feature because of the vast amount of data that must be gathered to understand such highly structured blend systems. The extra trick is to substitute deuterium ("heavy hydrogen") for hydrogen atoms in the HDPE component. The deuterium strongly shifts the Raman spectrum, making it easy to distinguish the two components. By controlling the polarization of the light, the technique provides additional details on the local crystal orientation of molecules in the polymer. The images show, for example, the formation of microscopic spherical regions of partial crystallization with the LLDPE more concentrated towards the center.

"This is a fast, three-dimensional chemical imaging technique that's particularly useful for studying microstructures of polymeric materials," says Lee. The group currently is using BCARS to find the correlation between microscopic structures with characteristics of deformation and thermal fusion on polyethylene pipes.

#GivingTuesday Sparks Big Spike in Donations - Prospecting - The ...

#GivingTuesday may well become a new holiday tradition, as donors generously responded to charities? pleas to take time off from shopping days like Cyber Monday and Black Friday to give and volunteer.

The amount of online donations processed by Blackbaud, a processor of online gifts,? shot up 53 percent to $10-million on Tuesday, compared with the same day last year.

Network for Good, another processor of online gifts, also reported a spike.? The total number of donations more than doubled, to 113 percent, on #GivingTuesday versus the Tuesday after Thanksgiving 2011. The amount collected Tuesday was also 55 percent more than the amount of donations collected on Monday.

Of course, with the holiday season just starting, it?s hard to know yet whether people accelerated the giving they typically wait to do until the end of December or whether the money will be an overall lift for nonprofits.

Still, charities both big and small, reported modest-to-big increases in donations on #GivingTuesday. Here?s how the day unfolded for some of those groups:

Project Hope, an international health charity, collected $6,720 on Tuesday, a more-than-eightfold increase from the $784 it collected on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving last year. It raised $2,950 from online donors and $70 from mobile-phone giving. But the most successful effort was a drive to encourage its workers to give: More than 100 employees did, raising $3,700.

Charity: Water,?which builds clean-water systems for people in impoverished countries,? increased donations 14 percent on Tuesday, raising $40,000 in total versus last year. The number of small donations grew from 361 last year to 505? this year, sparked largely by promotions the nonprofit made on social networks. It?s awaiting more donations from corporate supporters like Bonobos, Match.com, and Other World Computing, which sold services or goods to encourage their customers to give to the charity.

The Fishing School, a youth-development charity in Washington, raised $3,305 from 17 donors during #GivingTuesday. Last year, it didn?t receive any donations on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. In promoting this year?s event, the group appealed to its loyal donors and new ones via Facebook and Twitter.

The same strategy worked for Manna Food Center, a food bank in Gaithersburg, Md. It increased its one-day fundraising total threefold, from $620 last year to $1,875 this year. About 200 people saw the charity?s Facebook posts about#GivingTuesday; its tweets were redistributed a few times too, says Allison Krumsiek Anderson, a development manager.

Here?s how Mashable, a Web site that covers social-media news, encouraged people to share news about their contributions:

Iraq to help Jordan with free crude oil

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq says it is giving neighboring Jordan 100,000 barrels of oil as a gift to help overcome its economic difficulties.

The decision by the Cabinet Tuesday could be seen as an attempt by the Shiite-led Iraqi government to offer support to one of its Sunni neighbors. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have fled to Jordan because of violence that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of their country.

This month Jordan announced hikes in gas and fuel prices, sparking nationwide protests that turned violent in some areas. They included unprecedented calls on Jordan's King Abdullah II to step down.

According to an agreement with Iraq, Jordan buys 15,000 barrels of oil a day, with preferential prices of less than $18 a barrel, about one-fifth of the current market price of oil.

OECD cuts global economic forecasts over euro zone risks

PARIS (Reuters) - The OECD slashed its global growth forecasts on Tuesday, warning that the debt crisis in the recession-hit euro zone is the greatest threat to the world economy.

In light of the dire economic outlook, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development urged central banks to prepare for more exceptional monetary easing if politicians fail to come up with credible answers to the debt crisis.

The Paris-based think-tank forecast in its twice-yearly Economic Outlook that the global economy would grow 2.9 percent this year before expanding 3.4 percent in 2013. The estimate marked a sharp downgrade since the OECD last estimated a rate in May of 3.4 percent for this year and 4.2 percent in 2013.

The euro zone is facing two years of economic contraction, while the United States risks a recession if lawmakers there fail to agree a deal to avoid a combination of tax hikes and budget cuts that will otherwise go into effect next year.

Providing the deadlock in Washington is overcome, the world's biggest economy will grow 2.0 percent next year, the OECD estimated, cutting its forecast from 2.6 percent in May.

"The U.S. fiscal cliff is a very important source of concern, but the greatest downside risk remains the euro zone," OECD chief economist Pier Carlo Padoan told Reuters in an interview.

"The reason for that is not only recession, but also the fact that different negative policy (feedback) loops between sovereign debt, the banking situation and exit risks remain. So the overall zone remains in a state of fragility."

Cutting its estimates, the OECD forecast that the euro zone economy would contract 0.4 percent this year and another 0.1 percent next year, only returning to growth in 2014 with a rate of 1.3 percent.

The OECD warned that diverging financing conditions within the European monetary union threaten to pull it apart if policymakers fail to get a grip on the debt crisis.

"The euro area, which is witnessing significant fragmentation pressures, could be in danger," Padoan wrote in a foreword to the outlook, urging politicians to overcome deadlock over a single European Central Bank-led bank supervisor.

Given the weakness of the global economic outlook, the OECD warned governments against being too zealous in their belt-tightening efforts and recommended that Germany and China even pursue temporary stimulus spending to revive growth.

CENTRAL BANK SUPPORT

With many major economies in the mire, Padoan said it would be premature for central banks to take any exceptional monetary easing measures off the table at this point.

"They should be prepared to do more in the immediate term if things were to deteriorate," Padoan told Reuters.

He singled out the European Central Bank as the prime candidate for further action, saying it had room to cut its main interest rate by 25 basis points from its current record low of 0.75 percent.

The ECB should also consider setting a negative deposit rate and send a strong signal to markets on its long-term interest rate intentions, the OECD said.

The German central bank has been a vocal opponent of the ECB taking further exceptional actions to get the debt crisis under control, in part because of concerns that additional liquidity could boost inflation.

"We think fears that excessive liquidity could fuel inflation in the short term are misplaced," Padoan said.

Not only are all measures of inflation expectations currently subdued, he added, but there is also a risk that economists are underestimating the slack in major economies and therefore overestimating inflationary pressures.

The OECD said the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary easing programme was appropriate, although it called on the U.S. central bank to do more if the economic situation worsens.

In particular, the OECD said further purchases of government bonds and asset-backed securities would be warranted while the Fed might also need to consider buying other types of assets.

The OECD urged the Bank of Japan not only to maintain its zero-interest rate policy until inflation emerges convincingly, but also to step up the pace of its asset purchases.

The OECD said the Bank of England's interest rates were appropriate for the British economic outlook and said China had scope to ease monetary conditions.

ACLU sues over policy barring women from combat

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The American Civil Liberties Union and four servicewomen sued the U.S. Defense Department on Tuesday to end a ban on women in combat, calling the military the last bastion of discrimination by the federal government and saying modern warfare has already put women in the line of fire.

The civil rights group argued in a legal complaint filed in federal court in Northern California that the military policy barring women from roles primarily focused on combat solely because of their gender was unconstitutional.

Hundreds of thousands of women veterans returning from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are finding career paths off limits, sparking the challenge to a policy that has been in place officially since 1994 and unofficially for around two centuries.

"Nearly a century after women first earned the right of suffrage, the combat exclusion policy still denies women a core component of full citizenship - serving on equal footing in the military defense of our nation," the suit reads.

Military officials say their institution is changing, but that is not fast enough for the returning veterans. The lawsuit, the second this year in federal court, comes a year after the Department of Defense ended restrictions on gays serving openly in the military.

The women challenging the Department of Defense policy flew search-and-rescue helicopter missions and patrolled with male Marines in nominally non-combat counter terrorism job roles. Two of the four were wounded. But they found their work unrecognized when it came to promotions.

"In America today it's hard to conceive that there are still things you are not allowed to do, just because you are a woman," Captain Zoe Bedell, a Marine Corps reserves officer who served two tours in Afghanistan, told a news conference.

Her female marines, tasked with engaging with residents in support of male infantry units, found themselves fighting, too.

"They patrolled every day with the infantry, and sometimes twice a day. They lived every day on the same combat outposts in remote corners of Afghanistan. They wore the same gear and they carried the same rifles, and when the unit was attacked, my marines fought back," she said.

SLOWLY CHANGING

The lawsuit comes as the Department of Defense has slowly been dropping such gender-based restrictions. Under the 1994 policy, women are allowed to serve in combat units as medics, intelligence officers and other jobs at the brigade level.

In February, women were allowed to perform the same job in a battalion, which can be as small as a few hundred troops. The Pentagon dropped restrictions on women serving in units that were required to be based with combat units.

But women are still not allowed in infantry, or in smaller units engaged in combat. Women are barred from more the 238,000 positions, the ACLU said. Nevertheless, in Iraq and Afghanistan, where there are no clear battle lines, women have been pulled into combat in spite of the policy, the group added.

Asked about the lawsuit at a briefing, a Pentagon spokesman said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta remained "very committed to examining the expansion of roles for women in the U.S. military and he's done so."

"On his watch, some 14,500, give or take a few, positions have been made available to women. And he has directed the services to explore the possibility of opening additional roles for women in the military," spokesman George Little said.

"So I think his record is very strong on this issue. The recent openings that I just referred to are merely the beginning and not the end of a process," he added.

Some defense officials have noted that 10 years of combat had made it clear some gender restrictions were obsolete because battlefields faced by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan had no clear front lines and no way to eliminate exposure to fighting.

OPENS UP OPPORTUNITIES

The military has sometimes gotten around the rules by temporarily attaching women to battalions, which allowed them to work in the smaller units but kept them from officially receiving credit for being in combat.

Still, commanders are hampered from using the best people for a given job, and the military as a whole is losing dedicated soldiers, the suit says.

Since combat experience is a factor in promotions and job advancement in the military, women have had greater difficulty than men in moving up to the top ranks, officials said.

Search and rescue pilot Major Mary Jennings Hegar of the California Air National Guard was shot down with her chopper in Afghanistan. "I was actually the only person in my group to return fire," said Hegar, who was wounded but left active duty because of the lack of combat jobs.

The Air Force is the service most open to women, with no gender restrictions on 99 percent of jobs. The Marine Corps and U.S. Army are more difficult, barring women from more than 30 percent of jobs for enlisted personnel, mainly combat and armor positions, the Defense Department has said.

The ACLU and law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson filed the request for an injunction on the policy in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California. The lawsuit follows a similar suit filed in May by two Army reservists in federal court in Washington, D.C.

The new case is Hegar vs Panetta, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, No. 12-6005.

Body found in Gulf; may be missing oil rig worker

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A coroner is trying to determine whether the decomposed body of a man recovered from the Gulf of Mexico is a worker missing since a fire erupted on an offshore oil platform on Nov. 16.

The Coast Guard says the body was spotted Monday by the crew of a supply vessel about 2.5 miles off Grand Isle.

Jefferson Parish coroner investigator Tommy Evans said no ID was available after an autopsy Tuesday. Evans said his office planned to use dental records and possibly DNA tests to determine whether the body is of missing worker Jerome Malagapo.

The fire killed two other workers. Ellroy Corporal's body was found in the Gulf near the platform. Avelino Tajonera was critically burned and died at a Baton Rouge hospital on Nov. 23.

Thor Industries says competition weighs on 1Q

JACKSON CENTER, Ohio (AP) ? Thor Industries Inc.'s shares fell in after-hours trading Monday after the world's largest recreational vehicle maker and a major builder of commercial buses and ambulances said it is struggling with tough competition, price discounting and uncertain economic conditions.

The company, based in Jackson Center, Ohio, reported after the market closed that it earned $31 million, or 58 cents per share, for its fiscal first quarter that ended Oct. 31. That's up from $22.4 million, or 41 cents per share, earned in the first quarter last year.

Thor said the most recent quarter includes about $1.6 million in one-time costs for management changes and a legal settlement, which reduced its earnings per share by 2 cents.

The company's total revenue increased 30 percent to $875.6 million on stronger RV sales and a stable bus market.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting the company to earn 63 cents per share, adjusting for one-time items, on revenue of $876.8 million.

CEO Bob Martin said the company was pleased with its revenue growth and profitability during the first quarter, but said its results were affected by a competitive environment and the one-time expenses. He also said the intense competition has led to increased discounting that is hurting its sales and margins.

Thor will attend the largest RV tradeshow of the year this week and will assess the level of dealer confidence as it heads into the early retail show season in January.

Although the company has seen a recent upturn in demand, company chairman Peter Orthwein said that Thor remains cautious given the overall economic uncertainty and competitive pressure.

Shares fell $2.93, about 7 percent, to $40.67 in after-hours trading following the news. Its stock had gained 88 cents to close regular trading at $43.60.

Clay's TD lifts No. 14 Sooners to 51-48 Bedlam win

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? After the first overtime game in the Bedlam rivalry, a wild celebration on Owen Field and yet another 500-yard passing game, it all settled in for Landry Jones.

His last home game with Oklahoma was over, and what a way to go out.

Jones threw three touchdown passes and Brennan Clay scored on an 18-yard run in overtime to lift the 14th-ranked Sooners to a 51-48 win against No. 22 Oklahoma State in the Bedlam rivalry on Saturday.

"No better way," Jones said. "God blessed me so much tonight to be able to go out like this.

"There's no better way to go out."

The Sooners (9-2, 7-1 Big 12) never led during regulation, wiping out double-digit deficits in both halves. Backup quarterback Blake Bell tied it with 4 seconds left on a 4-yard keeper on fourth-and-1 after Jones directed the first 16 plays of an extended drive.

The victory kept alive Oklahoma's chances for at least a share of the Big 12 championship. The Sooners could win it outright by beating TCU next week if No. 7 Kansas State loses to Texas.

"Football's a crazy game," Jones said. "There's up sand downs, good and bad. You have to stay somewhere in that middle ground, realizing who you are and what you're capable of and what type of offense you are.

"When you need a play, just go out and make it."

On the Sooners' second play, Clay got through traffic at the line of scrimmage and then broke through attempted tackles by Daytawion Lowe and Shamiel Gary to score the game-winner and set off an unusually giddy celebration on Owen Field.

The Sooners had lost only three times at home in Bob Stoops' first 13 seasons but dropped games this season against Kansas State and Notre Dame.

Players ran around the field in celebration, joining fans in the stands in leaping up and down when "Jump Around" was blared over the loudspeaker.

"It always feels great to go out on a win," Jones said.

Joseph Randle ran for 113 yards and matched his career-high with four touchdowns for Oklahoma State (7-4, 5-3), which settled for Quinn Sharp's 26-yard field goal in overtime.

Last season, the Cowboys blew out Oklahoma 44-10 to snap an eight-game losing streak in the series and win their first Big 12 championship outright.

Oklahoma State fans rushed the field and tore down the goalposts after that win. A year later, the elation was replaced with disappointment.

"The truth is the better your program gets, the more success you have and the more highly regarded you are, the harder it is to lose," coach Mike Gundy said.

"In a World Series, a Super Bowl or a state championship game when you lose it's a crushing blow. And the only reason is because you've taken it to another level. For the most part, this program's at a different level."

With his second straight 500-yard passing game, Jones surpassed Texas Tech's Graham Harrell to become the Big 12's career passing leader. He also became the first Bowl Subdivision quarterback ever to throw for 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns in four seasons.

He led Oklahoma's first fourth-quarter comeback victory in five years a week earlier, beating West Virginia 50-49 on a pass to Kenny Stills with 24 seconds left.

"What more do you want from the guy? The guy was, again, fabulous out there tonight," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "He threw the ball all over. He threw it well, throwing bullets everywhere."

Jones finished 46 of 71, both school records, with an interception.

Clint Chelf threw for 240 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 63 yards for the Cowboys, who were trying to win on Owen Field for only the ninth time but couldn't protect an early 14-0 lead or an 11-point edge in the second half.

"There were a lot of big plays. You know there's going to be ups and downs throughout the game, so we were prepared for that," Chelf said. "We just tried to answer every time they did something and they just made one more play than us."

Jalen Saunders tied it at 38 on the second play of the fourth quarter, dodging three early tackles and racing 81 yards up the Sooners' sideline to score on a punt return.

Oklahoma State answered two possessions later, going 77 yards and taking a 45-38 lead on J.W. Walsh's 2-yard keeper with 10:41 remaining. The Cowboys sacked Jones on third down and forced an incomplete pass on fourth down to get the ball back with 7:07 to play, but went three-and-out to give it right back and set up Oklahoma's tying drive.

"We're strong," Clay said. "We're strong-willed and we can face adversity. We can go through any obstacle, and we know this offense is very potent."

Reader Response to Desiring Natural Motherhood | Literary Mama

In last month?s column Cassie Premo Steele invited readers to submit writing on the theme of Desiring Natural Motherhood. This essay by Jessica Ellis Laine brings to light two essential aspects of ?the natural? in mothering. First, that in opening ourselves to giving birth, we also open ourselves to the possibility of death. And second, that everything we take to be ?natural? is also at least partially constructed by the culture and history into which we are born.

Dar a Luz/Bringing to Light: How I Came to Desire Motherhood in My Own Right

By Jessica Ellis Laine

Photos of our dead daughters, Eva and Camila, sit in a double frame on our dresser. Last year my husband and I lit a candle and scattered marigolds to honor their brief lives on the Day of the Dead. I can see the double frame from my perch on the bed. It is November in Minnesota, and I have been on bed rest for my pregnancy for the past 14 weeks.

My mother calls me, her tone of voice subdued and funereal. ?I have some bad news from Peru,? she says.

My heart skips a beat. Despite having been born in Chicago and living in the United States ever since, half of my relatives live in Peru.

?Do you remember your first boyfriend?? she asks.

?Carlos? Oh my God, what? Is he dead?? My stomach roils. Carlos would be in his early 40s now. We haven?t kept in touch, but I?ve heard through the grapevine he is happily married with two small children.

?No, not that boyfriend. Your other first boyfriend, Pepe,? my mother says, sounding impatient.

I exhale loudly into the phone. ?I didn?t have another first boyfriend.? I spit out my words like bullets out of a machine gun.

For the past 25 years, this subject has been a bone of contention between us. When I was 15 years old, I visited my Aunt Maria Teresa in Peru and she set me up with her husband?s nephew, Pepe. We went on a few dates, each one progressively worse than the last. On our last date, Pepe said he was going to give me a night I would never forget. That evening, he took me to a traditional Peruvian show called a pe?a. Pepe?s brother, sister, 35-year-old aunt, and her companion were all waiting at the door when we arrived at the club ? so that I could pay their entrance fees. Pepe was right: it was a night I never forgot.

?Mom, Pepe was never my boyfriend. You know that. Please stop saying that.? Anxiety triggers small contractions in my belly. The doctor says the best thing I can do is relax. My mother knows I need to stay calm but continues to talk about Pepe.

?Well, that?s not what Pepe said when I saw him in Lima three years ago,? my mom sniffs. ?He introduced me as the lady who almost became his mother-in-law.?

?He was joking.?

?I don?t think so.?

?What happened? Did Pepe die?? I ask.

?No, his father did.?

?Isn?t his father like 85 years old??

?Yes, but it?s still a tragedy.?

?Is it??

?Yes.?

?Did you know Pepe?s father?? I ask my mother.

?Well, I saw him at Maria Teresa?s reu?ions, her family get-togethers.?

?So you didn?t really know him.? My mother enjoys experiencing the vicarious thrill of sweet sorrow.

?I knew him well enough. I called and spoke to Pepe and the rest of his family while they were holding the wake.?

?Okaaayy.? I?m wondering if Pepe?s family knew who my mother was when she called.

?And your aunts and I are going to hold a memorial service for Pepe?s father here in Australia.?

?For your brother-in-law?s brother who died in Peru??

?Yes, and you should send a card to Pepe?s mother.?

?Why would I send a card to Pepe?s mother?? I ask. ?I don?t know her.?

?Because it?s the right thing to do.?

This is one of my mother?s favorite sayings, something she says when she wants my sister and me to do something that benefits others but is somehow detrimental to us. If my parents were having a party and she needed cleaners, servers, and/or bartenders, my sister and I were pressed into service because it was the right thing to do. When I was 13, I served a gin and tonic to a party guest who took one sip and told me the drink ?wasn?t strong enough.? I remember thinking, What?s wrong with this picture?

Community can be a beautiful thing, but even as a child I thought my mother might be twisting it into something ugly. I was born to a mother who sacrificed her children?s needs for the needs of the family at large. Consequently I made choices that were very different than what my mother wanted me to make, and in doing so, I learned to mother myself. I refused to move from Chicago to Australia with my parents. Instead I went to college in the Midwestern United States so I could finally live my own life. I promised myself when I had children ? if I had children ? I would put them first.

Many things come naturally to my mother: event planning, traveling, color coordinating her wardrobe. Motherhood is not one of these things. I believe my mother is a frustrated CEO disguised in mother?s clothing.

~

For many years, I was afraid to have children. I was afraid I would be like my mother, a relatively good person who was a relatively poor mother, someone who put everyone else before her own children. I think my mother regarded her children as faulty appendages on her body: hands and feet that never fully cooperated with their owner.

Like my mother, I held off having children. Eventually, I realized that raising a menagerie of dogs, cats, and rabbits was just not cutting it for me. I wanted to have children. Like my mother, I thought I would enjoy carefree pregnancies well into my late 30s. I thought wrong.

Over the next three years, I experienced five miscarriages. I have nothing to show for them other than the double frame that sits on top of my dresser.

~

?Maybe you should stop trying,? my mother says on the phone one evening.

?Why would you say that??

?You?re getting older and things will get harder, not easier, from here on out.?

My blood begins to boil. ?What would you know about this, about how I feel??

?Probably more than you think,? my mother says in a soft voice. She is silent for a moment. Then she says, ?I lost a baby when I was 42. I think it was a boy, although we never found out for sure. I still miss him.?

?I?m sorry.?

?I know you are, querida. And whatever happens, you are a mother. You will always be the mother of Eva, Camila, and your other three babies. Always.?

Is it possible for a short phone conversation to end a lifetime of resentments? Perhaps not, but it?s a start.

~

A few months later, I fly to Australia to attend my mother?s 75th birthday party. I miss my period. I pee on a stick and find out I?m pregnant for the sixth time. I start to bleed and think, Oh God, not again, but then the bleeding stops. I return home to Minneapolis and am placed on bed rest.

I find out we are having a boy who will be born shortly before I turn 42. I wonder if he is the reincarnation of my lost brother. I wonder if he will be born screaming rather than silent as his sisters were. I wonder if he will bring my mother and me closer together or push us farther apart. I wonder many things.

But I don?t wonder if he is the answer to my prayers. I just know that he is.

~

Jessica Ellis Laine enjoys cooking Latin food, globe trotting, and observing people at the dog park. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her husband, Harlan, and their hyperactive black lab, Sinjin. Jessica is also working on her first novel, The Copper Shark, while on bed rest expecting her first baby.

Notes from Cassie Premo Steele:

I was thrilled when I received Jessica?s essay for the "Birthing the Mother Writer" column this month ? for two reasons. First, I want the guest columns by readers to reflect the diversity of mothering that exists among Literary Mamas. And second, this essay illustrates beautifully how ?natural? mothering is always constructed and influenced by historical, cultural, and familial patterns. While my Notes usually focus on the behind-the-scenes editing and revision process, this month I thought it would be interesting to share the dialogue Jessica and I had while working on the column.

CPS: Many people are waking up to the power and presence of Latinos in the United States. While there are those of us who have known that these demographic changes have been happening for decades, the recent election brought light (dar luz!) to this phenomenon. I'd love to be able to ask you some questions about being a Latina Literary Mama.

JEL: Sure!

CPS: In your original submission email, you referred to your essay as unveiling "the dark side of Latina mothering." Can you explain to LM readers what you mean?

JEL: Latino culture encompasses so many wonderful things: faith, community, and multi-generational relationships to name a few.?My essay is about the "dark side" that shadows the Latino sense of community and inclusion. I wanted to highlight the danger of erasing a person's (especially a child's) sense of self-identity in order to meet the needs of the family or group at large. This topic comes up regularly during chats with my Latina girlfriends, mainly first-generation or second-generation women like me who live in the U.S.

CPS: Can you talk a bit about the challenges of individuation as you navigate the collective values of Latin culture and the individualism of US culture??How does balance play a role in all this?

JEL: I have found it difficult to carve out a balanced life for myself and still maintain good relations with my extended family. For years, I felt reluctant to assert my individual rights.?An unemployed cousin lived with me for some time and then became incensed when I finally kicked her out. I told an estranged aunt that she could not stay with me after my knee replacement, a very painful?procedure requiring several weeks of recuperation.?Her children were livid. In both instances, I felt extremely guilty.

It took years of counseling for me to realize that many Americans didn?t live the way I did. They put themselves first and didn?t feel bad about it.?They weren?t afraid to say no to unreasonable demands from their family. I will always have to work hard to find a good?balance between meeting my needs and the needs of my family.

CPS: I wonder how you think patriarchy and paternalism factors into this discussion. Is there a respect for mothering, for example, in Latin cultures that also goes along with increased machismo? How have you negotiated this as a Latina in the United States?

JEL: My father is American, but joined the Peace Corps and went to Chile in the early 60s where he became fluent in Spanish.?He pretty much embraced the Latino lifestyle from day one.?Most people think he is Chilean. As a result, I was raised in a typical Latino-style patriarchal home.?My father was the main breadwinner.?While my mother worked full time, all of the household tasks like cooking and cleaning fell upon her shoulders. My father?s mother lived with us but it was my mother -- and not my father -- who cared for her. Interestingly enough, my mother made most of the decisions regarding our upbringing. In this manner, my mother ruled the roost.

It doesn?t escape my attention that I decided to marry a non-Latino.?Our marriage is more of a partnership than my parents? marriage was.?We make important decisions together.?We split the chores. My husband even cooks, which is amazing to me since my father only ever knew how to make toast.?And my husband plans to change our son?s diapers after he is born.

CPS: One more question: You write with such clarity and honesty about your experiences. What would you say to other Literary Mamas trying to find their voices in the midst of multicultural mothering?

JEL: There is a ?keeping up appearances? mentality we can help to dismantle by writing honestly about our experiences.?We need to allow ourselves to be vulnerable in our writing, even though this goes against the grain of many cultures.?I felt vulnerable writing this?essay. I exposed my weaknesses and aired my family's dirty laundry in public. I actually considered not submitting this piece.?In the end, I?m glad I did.?I think it?s important to share these difficult experiences with others.

New York City to end fuel rationing on Saturday

Vani Hari, the food writer behind the wildly successful blog, Food Babe, was lucky when she graduated from college: She landed a great job right away. That?s a golden ticket for any recent graduate who has hit the job market during the worst economic slump in decades, but Hari?s luck was even better than most. Her job catered all her meals. She'd hit the jackpot. That is, she says, until she gained almost 30 pounds on her small frame in just a few months.

lijansharma: kudals: molina anvil: Reference and Education: Proper

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

Let Leftovers Be Leftovers

Turkey and veggie lasagna.

Turkey and veggie lasagna

Sure, wasting leftovers can be tragic, but a turkey samosa may be even more unfortunate. In 2007, Jill Pellettieri warned readers about the impulse to add turkey to whatever recipe comes to mind in the days following Thanksgiving. Her original article is printed below.????

Reading this list of recipes?and trust me, there are plenty more?is enough to make you want to go cold turkey on turkey. Every November, magazine editors and food writers, cooking gurus and TV personalities, foist turkey leftover recipes upon us. Unless we put our tired, picked-over turkey carcass to good use, they tell us, we're wasting some precious opportunity. But don't be fooled. Do not be tempted by that recipe for turkey and leek risotto. Those stringy last bits of gristle and meat that cling to your bird are better suited to the raccoons who rummage through your garbage. Do you really want to morph the centerpiece of your most ceremonial meal of the year into turkey bundles (stuffed with turkey, cream cheese, dill weed, and water chestnuts, among other things)?

But I don't want to be wasteful! Now, of all times of the year, I'm supposed to be thankful for my food, you might think. I'm not saying to abandon leftovers entirely. On the contrary: Embrace them. Just don't turn them into some bastardized concoction. Enjoy them for what they are.?

Turkey leftover recipes are, essentially, a sham?an invention of food entertainment providers hard-up for new holiday ideas. There are only so many variations on the traditional Thanksgiving dinner (this year, try making Indian-spiced turkey breast!), and leftover recipes offer a seemingly appropriate way of filling pages and air time. (Few are brave enough to leave the leftovers alone; kudos to Food and Wine for doing so this year.)

But even the purveyors of these recipes recognize the absurdity of what they're presenting?they don't really expect any of them to become mainstays in your repertoire. (Perhaps the only exception is turkey stock made from your carcass?for the truly ambitious.) Of its turkey pot pie, Gourmet disclaims, "I can't guarantee this pie will make it onto your list of classics, but I'm pretty certain it will be a strong contender." Not if you make it with turkey, though. "This recipe could easily become a year-round favorite?simply substitute supermarket rotisserie chicken for the turkey."

Due to its taste and size, turkey has long played second fiddle to its poultry brethren. Turkey meat, especially the breast, is often dried out, and it's not as rich as that of more exotic birds, like guinea hen or capon. Its heft makes it more difficult to cook than the more flavorful, more manageable, and more common chicken. On Thanksgiving, we're willing to overlook these flaws for the sake of tradition. Still, many try to compensate for turkey's shortcomings by getting creative in the kitchen: We'll deep-fry, grill, brine, even spatchcock in an effort to zest up this bird. But I challenge you to count on more than one hand all the times you've made a turkey entr?e since last Thanksgiving that wasn't a sandwich or a burger. (For that matter, when was the last time you ordered turkey tetrazzini at a restaurant? How about turkey pho?)
